Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Yellow fruit annona(sugar apple)
« on: August 03, 2022, 10:09:42 AM »
I think any annona is worth growing and giving a try.
Where did you find this picture?
I saw some purple sugar apples on etsy but the attached video the fruit
is green? I am always suspicious when I see out of the ordinary pictures
of fruit. Can you get seeds or plants of this white annona I guess sugar apple?

https://www.etsy.com/listing/997347002/9-to-11-purple-baby-sugar-apple-tree?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=sugar+apple&ref=sr_gallery-1-17&frs=1&organic_search_click=1

look at the attached video the sugar apples are green?

The leaves are dark green and look ok. Maybe you can cut back on nitrogen
if you are giving nitrogen? I have a pickering also and the old leaves don't look
different then yours. I would be concerned if the new growth has issues

This is my second one from the tree this year.
Taste like a sweeter na dai sugar apple with a little subacid kick.
I think it's a atemoya back crossed with a sugar apple. Not much seeds and lots of natural pollination.

This one is a keeper and does well in soflo
Did you hand pollinate?

This was from last year and looks like its close to the size of yours.
This year I only had 15 fruit and I had to pick them green or lose them
to a woodpecker. They were good but are better if they ripen on the tree.
The woodpecker ended up getting 3

If I girdle the trunk how wide and how deep should the cuts be?

By the way I did remove the stakes this morning.

When you removed the stakes what happened?
Does the trunk support the canopy?

cricket frass is cricket manure

I agree if your trees are getting rain daily then it should be enough.
My rainy season is spotty and the days it doesn't rain I water. I lived next to
an experimental macadamia farm at my previous residence. That guy
was watering a smaller amount twice a day. He also had a watering system that
injected acid to lower PH.
Where did your original seeds come from?
I would ask the people in the governemnt office if you can airlayer the
existing tree. Maybe for a small fee they would? If the branches are high it
is better so passerbys can't disturb. Bring a ladder and do it right.

432
Is Macadamia grown in that area?
If there are producing trees in that area would it be possible to airlayer a tree?
A macadamia from seed would take 10 years to produce if the tree was growing.
At the rate your trees are growing it might take 50 years. If you insist on growing
a seedling then I would consider repotting a tree and watering it daily.
I have planted trees in the past that ended up crashing and I have also planted
trees that would not grow for whatever reason. I dug them up and repotted and
they started growing in a pot?
Also I would water one of the trees that you planted daily with a couple gallons of water for a month.
You should see new growth by then. I have a tree I just planted and I water daily and
it is putting new growth out in less then a month

They are clean and perfect looking though

I am really bad at thinning my annona trees. I have always heard fruit should be
at least 6" apart for maximum size. Recently I saw a youtube video and Dr Crane from
TREC said hand pollination will increase the size. In your pictures your close fruit
looks like it's doing ok. It's probably too late to thin now.  Maybe next year thin one tree?

I have some airlayered macadamia trees. I have been struggling for
several years and killed several trees along the way. Now I seem to have figured out
their needs and last Winter when we were below 32f for over 5 hours I lost 2 more trees.
They love acidic soil and I add a handful of sulphur pellets to the soil every month and
they love water. If I water them daily they put on new growth. This past year I have been
giving them a cricket frass for fertilizer and they are nice an dark green and growing
with the daily water and sulphur.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Makok Sapodilla Tree

I have a makok in the ground at my house.
It has barely grown since I put it in the ground.
It fruits prolifically every year and I have to thin the fruit
to avoid branches breaking. I put it on the South side of my house
in a protected area and this past year when we were under 32F for
over 5 hours it was the only tree that lived. I lost a Morena, Silas Wood,
and Haysa

I have a tree
I have plenty of cuttings available for $4ea
They are suppose to root from cuttings but I have not tried

440
The leaves look more like atemoya leaves then sugar apple leaves.
The small purple fruit looks like it is going to dry up and fall off.
That happens especially towards the end of the season. My red colored
sugar apples start out green before turning. I have never gotten different
colored fruit on the same tree?

Think I heard Alex in an interview say if he could only pick one it would be Pickering. That really says something. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but I think he said Cac would be a close 2nd. Both solid mangos

What is your favorite ben mango?

I was hoping more people would respond???
If you were going to be marooned on a deserted island and only have room for one mango tree
which one would it be?
Now you see people are thinking what would even grow there!  Just stick with "only one."
You're right I didn't want to complicate matters
What is your #1 mango Johnb51?

California oranges are prettier on the outside. Bite into them and they are rather dry and tasteless. California is probably the worst tasting citrus though its ok to eat. The florida ones look ugly on the outside from high humidity and rain, but they are bursting with juice and taste super good because it rains every day in the summer and high humidity. Though maybe sun and soil and other factors are at play too. Brazil oranges are decent, better than California, almost as good as Florida but not quite.

The citrus virus is all around the world but hit Florida the hardest. Growing citrus in a greenhouse further north is actually a good idea. I like citrus a lot better than mangos.
The citrus industry in CA an FL is completely different. Florida
grows the juice orange which ripens in the early Spring. The sweetness has to
do with cool temperatures. The groves actually do brix tests before they harvest.
CA produces the sweet tangerines and eating oranges which ripen in the Fall. The
sweetness comes from cool nights which Florida doesn't have in September/October
The greening has had a profound affect and the groves are fertilizing 3-4 times as much
and getting 60% less oranges. But I was talking to a friend who manages several groves
and the orange juice demand is almost gone. If greening would not have effected the
trees there would be a huge over supply of oranges now and the prices would have plummeted

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Time for air layering ??
« on: July 15, 2022, 09:41:07 PM »
I know someone who airlayered avocados successfully and saw his trees
several years later. They were doing great
I tried to airlayer a longan in the summer and got 3 out of 6 to root.
I tried the next Spring and got 6 out of 6 to take.
Based on this I try to airlayer in the Spring if possible.
I did do a guava tree in a neighbor's yard last Summer to
give to a different neighbor and got 1 out of 1 to root

Only one mango tree. You have space for only one mango and it can't
be a cocktail tree. What's it gonna be?
