Tropical Fruit Discussion / " White Sugar " variety of sugar apple
« on: February 27, 2018, 08:19:16 AM »
    Good morning group

I was looking over the plant list for papaya tree nursery and Alex has a sugar apple variety called " White Sugar " listed. I did a forum search but it turned up nothing. Does anyone in the group have any experience growing this tree ? I'm curious and considering buying one but would like to know more about it first.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tertoh Avocado
« on: December 31, 2017, 06:07:13 PM »
Reading the post about the Corona avocado earlier , reminded me about the tertoh avocado which I had read about quite a few years ago. It was a introduction of a 3 pound giant from the property of Mr. Castillas from Guatemala, by Wilson Popenoe. Don't know why it never really caught on as it was said to have excellent flesh , small seed , and of course lots of meat. Once while having a phone conversation with Jim Nietzel I brought up this avocado to him and he said that he actually thought that he came across fruit of this type at a exibit at the San Diego fair. I tried tracking down some budwood and found that there appeared to not be a source in california . Florida did have it listed in a germ plasm , But when I finally made contact with someone about ordering budwood I was told that the tree in their collection had sun blotch virus. I am writing this more as a curiousity to see if any readers might have heard of or even better might know of a tree to source budwood from.

    Hello group

I'm curious about this for awhile. I have about 7 or 8 lychee varieties growing in my greenhouse all next to one another. I have lost 3 hak ip trees now and am wondering if they need cooler temperatures or maybe more humidity ? All the other lychee trees are doing fine but like I said I've lost a few hak ip trees now and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with it ? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Red Guillermo ilama
« on: August 12, 2017, 09:37:20 PM »
Anyone here growing this red Guillermo ilama? I didn't see anything about it using the search box. I'm curious if it's maybe the same thing that I already have.  I have a grafted ilama that the nursery just called " red ilama ". I'm wondering if these two might be the same.

I have a black beauty bs and it's been flowering the last couple of years but they never seem to take and develop into fruit. The tree is a couple of years old and is around 7 to 8 feet high and girth of trunk is a couple of inches thick. Am I expecting too much from this young tree ? I'm curious what others experiences have been time wise from planting to getting your first fruit set .

I thought that I might have heard that these two are the same but not sure. I'm looking for clarification before buying both .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Varieties of Ross sapote ?
« on: May 07, 2017, 01:10:53 PM »
I was curious if there are any named varieties of Ross sapote ? The reason that I ask is because the 3 gallon tree that I bought a few weeks ago from champa nursery is a grafted tree.  I repotted it yesterday into a 7  gallon and then I started wondering why they would graft it unless the scion was from a tree with desirable characteristics. Anyone have any ideas about this ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trip to champa and mimosa nursery today
« on: April 10, 2017, 11:07:13 PM »
I spent the day going from nursery to nursery looking for tropical fruit trees today. I ended up at Champa at the end of my trip. This was my first time there and I was amazed at how many trees he had packed in there .  Lots of mangoes, lychee , longan , star fruit etc.  Then I came upon some nice 3 gallon grafted Ross sapote.  I got one of those. They also had a lot of nice looking 3 gallon green sapote. If your in the so cal area check out this little gem of a nursery 😊

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fertilizer for container trees
« on: December 05, 2016, 08:38:51 AM »
    Hi group

Ive been looking for a granule 7-5-4 fertilizer to use for my potted trees and have came up empty handed. I did find a citrus / avocado mix made by peaceful valley farms all derived from natural components . The formulation is 8-5-4- with a 3% calcium . My question is , would the calcium over time effect for instance my mangos ? Appreciate any feedback on this matter.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Growing fruit trees in fabric pots
« on: November 16, 2016, 08:34:18 AM »
I know that there are some members on this forum who for what ever the reason choose to grow their plants / trees in containers. I came across a vendor in Los Angeles who sells the fabric pots . The sizes vary from 1 gallon all the way up to 200 gallon. Have any members on this forum actually used these fabric pots ? I must admit I am curious if they actually " Air prune " the roots like they claim. I have several varieties of white sapote in 25 gallon and will need to repot in the spring and was curious about whether these might work for this purpose.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Germinating Ilama seeds
« on: September 26, 2016, 01:21:39 PM »
   Hello

I have some Ilama seeds that I started soaking in warm water last night. The plan was to soak them for 24 hours and then sow them in small pots using bottom heat. Now I'm wondering if it might be better to put the soaked seeds in a moist paper towel / zip lock bag  and place them on the heat pad checking them every few days ?  What are your thoughts on this ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Do mango flowers need cross pollination ?
« on: August 28, 2016, 01:30:42 PM »
    Hello

I think I already know the answer to this question but I'm asking on behalf of a co worker and do not want to give him bad information. He has a single mango tree and was wondering if it would set fruit without a second tree ?

A coworker friend of mine mentioned to me yesterday that he and his wife will be visiting south Florida around July 22nd,-24th and he was interested in what kinds of tropical fruit would be available to purchase at that time. Also since he will be renting a car to get around , he would like suggestions of places to visit where he can  tropical fruit trees . Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is 7 dust ok to use on mangoes ?
« on: April 15, 2016, 01:38:09 PM »
Just wondering if it's ok to dust my mangoes with 7 dust because I've been witnessing earwigs eating on the leaves and blossoms at night. I was having trouble with them in my garden raised beds until I dusted around the base and killed them off. Now there's a bunch of them in my greenhouse and their all over my mangoes when I check with a flashlight.  Also been seeing slugs eating on the flowers too. I put corrys out yesterday but still seen some on the flowers last night .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Which green sapote variety is better ?
« on: April 11, 2016, 03:19:38 PM »
I understand that taste is a subjective thing , with that being said I'm looking forward to hearing your different opinions about which green sapote taste best. I'm looking to buy one and would like to hear the pros and cons on IFAS  and Fairchild varieties . I have a Makawao on order but he said it would be over a year till it's ready.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need to repot a pitomba
« on: March 21, 2016, 12:08:41 AM »
I have a 5 gallon pitomba that I would like to repot and was wondering what a good mix would be ? Seems like I heard somewhere that they like 50 % peat and 50% perlite ?  I didn't want to go off half cocked before checking here first . This seems like it would be better suited for miracle fruit. I need advice on what to mix for the pitomba .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Creamhart avocado
« on: March 13, 2016, 06:43:44 PM »
Just wondering if anyone , particularly in the southern california area might know of a source for budwood or grafted plants of the creamhart avocado ? This was a variety that Orton Engelhart came up with . Seems like nobody knows where any of these trees might have ended up being planted. There has to be some somewhere as Orton sold trees from his nursery.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Found some Ilama seeds from 2008
« on: February 21, 2016, 07:08:49 PM »
I was looking for something on one of the shelfs in my garage today when I came across a box of Ilama seeds that I fellow rare fruit grower sent to me back in  '08 .  I wonder if any of them could possibly germinate ?  Anyone have experience germinating old Ilama seeds ?

I've got around 18 mangos that I bought last summer, most of which were bought as 3 gallon size trees. They were all repotted to 5 gallon size pots. Right now their all really taking off in growth . I'd like to repot them and was wondering if it would be too much of a jump to put them in a squat 15 ?  Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
