Edward in April?
« on: April 16, 2012, 12:39:35 PM »
Has anybody's Edward mango tree ripened fruit this month? Neighbor has a tree which has been bearing fruit for a couple of weeks that I believe to be an Edward.

Excaliburs is getting there but nowhere near ready to pick yet.  It was, however, one of the earliest to bloom and begin setting fruit on the property.

My neighbor has an Edward with two crops on it.  The early ones look about 3-4 weeks away from being ready......

OK. Interesting. My neighbor has been enjoying fruits for a couple of weeks already with another crop scheduled for June. Is this tree an edward? It sure tastes like one. These pics are from about 2 weeks ago.

Sure looks like an edward, looks like mine, have some real small fruit too as well as mature ones, but the smaller fruit are dropping off so I dont think I will see a second crop.

Ahh OK. Thanks for the info! If the edward did that every year, that would be a fantastic mango.

We have never had it produce a big crop, have about a dozen and a half nice size mangoes on the east side of the tree only for some weird reason, the smaller fruit are also on top of the tree but as I said they are dropping like flies.Great tasting mango,I cant wait to compare it to the Young, that tree has a bunch on it right now for only being 3 years old,we will see if it lives up to the hype test.

OK. You'll have to let us know what you think of the Young.

My Edwards are now about the size of ping pong balls, hopefully some hold on the tree and are ready in June.

Edward always seems to be a somewhat shy bearer.

No, even in my yard, this year it is bearing very shyly.  The blooming fruiting cycle(s) with Edward is interesting.  It is usually one of the first to push blooms each season.  The first bloom tends to run right into the cold spells we have here and that, in my opinion, limits the fruit set of the first bloom.  Then, Edward, as many other cultivars will also do, will push a second set of blooms and there will be additional fruits set from that later bloom.  This is really not an off season crop issue but just a staggered bloom.  As I said, other trees do the same.  As long as the fruit set is light and the timing is still before February, many varieties will push more bloom and have the opportunity to have a later maturing crop. This year the first bloom produced next to no fruit, even though it was not that cold (so much for that theory, now that I point that out to myself). Maybe this was a wet winter or powdery mildew issue for which I never sprayed.  I wasn't paying close enough attention to say, sorry to admit. The second bloom didn't fare all that much better either.  Definitely not up to standards for Edward.....the massive, prolific, producer that it ordinarily is in my yard (in my dreams anyway).

Edwards about 2 weeks away from being ready in WPB.  West facing and protected fruit doing the best.  Wind has gotten to many of the younger fruit.  Staggered bloom, earliest in mid November.  Right at 150 days.  Can't wait!
