I have to plant 2 treees in one hole. Need help pairing these up. Which two cultivars would go good together for planting in one hole?
Here's my list.

Mallika
Carrie
Peach cobbler
Juicy peach
Mahachanok
Sweet tart
Lemon Zest
Ugly betty

Also, maybe a suggestion for a 3in1 planting style.

Some of those are hard to get. What I have read here is you want two trees with similar growth rates. IOW you (obviously) don't want a vigorous upright grower paired with a dwarfish condo mango variety.

Peach cobbler and Mallika....both upright growers of similar growth rate
Sweet tart and Carrie....both medium sized, somewhat compact spreading growth
Lemon zest and ugly betty likely too vigorous to be shared in same hole.
Juicy peach is tommy atkins seedling, don't bother
Maha Chanok could be paired with mallika, both upright with similar growth.

Some of those are hard to get. What I have read here is you want two trees with similar growth rates. IOW you (obviously) don't want a vigorous upright grower paired with a dwarfish condo mango variety.

I think it all depends on the location and amount of sunlight. For example, I think you could put a pickering in the same hole as lemon zest, if you put the pickering in front (like understory layers in forest) and pruned both to get sufficient sunlight

Why would you tell someone to "not bother" on Juicy Peach just because its a Tommy Atkins seedling? You do realize that mangos don't necessarily resemble their parents, right?

I think a bigger issue is the growth habit of the two. ..Sweet Tart is vigorous and upright, Carrie is much more compact, slower wider.

What about pairing Ugly Betty with Carrie since it is a carrie seedling?
Lemon Zest and sweet tart are vigorous upright growers
Mallika is pretty vigorous and PC is a kent seedling so that may work
Juicy Peach and mahachanok may work too, but I would make sure MC gets the most sun (either in front, or on east side)

I paired Spirit of 76, Keitt and Haden in one. Edward and Duncan in another and Manohar with Alfonoso. The last are the most vigorous and toughest to control. In Socal you can easily keep them under 7-9' on turpentine rootstock.

I got greedy and ended up planting 3 trees in one hole. Also, I added Pickering and Edward to the list.. Thanks to all for the recommendations.

Combo one- Carrie, Mallika, Pickering

Combo two- Mahachanok, Ugly Betty, Peach Cobbler

Combo Three- Edward, Sweet Tart, Lemon Zest

You should prune those branches that are pointed inwards for more airflow and so they don't get crowded.... oh and we could use some scions... lol

They all look great. Great selection of types as well.

I was looking at a full grown Carrie in Merritt Island that has limbs as big as my leg at 14 feet up. It was a very old tree and had been topped at that height several times.

The trunk was much larger than I expected also. Imo, that top pic near your house, two of the tress needs to come out. The inside plant has a wall on one side and two trees on the other blocking sun in all directions. As they grow you will see the problem.

I would leave the Pickering there, and move the other two as they are too big and too close to your house. Not sure how big they will get in your climate but the Carrie I saw, won't fit in that spot. I am pulling out a Mallika as it gets a lot bigger than some advertise.

The Carrie alone would be too close imo. Perfect for the much smaller Pickering however. The original Pickering at Walter Zills is no where near as big as the Carrie I saw.

It may be fine in your area as your conditions are so much different than ours.

Why do people feel the need to let trees tgat are clearly to small to be fruiting hold fruit. It has bern repeated and the horse is now dead. ..you are doing nothing but harming the life of a small mango tree when you let it hold fruit like that. This isnt a sprint snd there are no awards given to the person who has a small tree like that hold fruit, and th a t many fruit, to boot. People need to learn patience.

How do you do it? Is it just the lower humidity of California decreasing fungal growth?
Do you do anything special to keep aphids and other insects at bay to decrease loss of tree sap/nutrients?
I see you use colored brown wood chips but I assume the brown color does nothing special?

Maybe the sun is shinning through the special atmosphere over the pacific and stimulating plant growth more than through the atmosphere over the Atlantic. Perhaps the San Gabriel Mountains are drawing the trees upward toward it or maybe the moon passes more over California than Florida and pulls the tree up as it lifts the tides. And to top it all off you posted pictures of the trees having maturing fruit which could have made them even taller had the nutrients not been sent to the fruit. Wow.

TnTrobbie, all the fruits from these young trees this year tasted amazing! That's no BS. All the people that got to try them had the same response. Im taking full flavor mangos here. The Carries were my favorite. Tasted same as last year, absolutely delicious! It's pretty incredible how such young trees can produce such awsome tastings fruits. I could only imagine how much more intense the flavors will be as the trees matures.

Palmcity, all the trees were purchased as 7g trees. Except for the Pickering was tiny 3g. Im pretty lucky over here. No issues with any insects/pest at all. From time to time, I do notice those sap sucking bugs. The trees are healthy, so not too much of a concern. As for the brown colored wood chips, nothing special about it. It's just to prevent weed from growing.

Pictures updates taken today on combo plantings. All are growing well, especially peach cobbler. Only little Pickering is falling behind. Some minor die back here and there. Mahachanok almost ready to eat.

I know you mentioned that you bought 7G trees. Did you let them fruit in the first year after planting?

Please tell us your secrets!

I've got VP, Glenn, LZ, PPK, Sweet Tart, Phoenix, and Fruit Punch. I've also got Carrie and Malika, but I think I might need to graft the Carrie and Malika onto my mature Manila and lose the trees on the turpentine. For me, they just flower too much and don't grow vegetatively (not vigorous enough varieties in my area?). Will probably replace with Keitt, Haden, and Gold Nugget on Manila rootstock.
