I was thumbing through some of my unidentified and strange myrciarias today, (actually showing them off to a friend), when I noticed a 3yr old seedling, in a 3 gal pot, only about 2.5ft tall, that had flowers popping out.

the seeds I planted came from an old grower in FL who had several unidentified selections growing at his house...I'm still not sure what type it is...but my first guess is some sort of M. cauliflora....but it's definitely different than the Red jaboticaba.

this has to be one of the most precocious trees I've seen...i just bumped it up into a 10 gal pot.

I will pot pics if it sets some fruits!

Wow Adam, that is very exciting. Is that a gall on the tree near the soil line? If it is, I wonder if that is what is causing the early flowering.

those are wounds from where I cut off a bunch of suckers earlier in the year...but the bark does look a little deformed.

I guess time will tell!

Can't be glomerata (or even a close relative), foliage doesn't have hair.

I have a few trees from this batch of seeds...I'm watching them a little closer now...looks like another one could be ready to flower....I'll post a pic if it does.

they have been sitting in water for a while (I keep them in a kiddie pool, with one of my large red jabos in a 25 gal pot.)...it's cool because they flower with minimal sunlight exposure.

Interesting,

Between low light requirements and precocity you may have a super tree on your hands! I hope the fruit is good!

The little plant makes me wonder how long it's been flowering for...

Usually when a plant first flowers it's just one or two spots on the tree, and just a few flowers.

This little bugger has at least 8 spots on the trunk that have flowers....and a few of the bloom clusters are already densely packed with flowers.

Now I'm most curious to see how much fruit it will set.

starting to think the guy who sent me seeds sent a red jaboticaba seed!

I was comparing the foliage to my red jabo today, it's almost identical!

here is another pic of the trunk next to my pinky finger, just to give you an idea of scale.

it's flowering all over, but I'm doubtful it will hold fruit...(I'm sure it's going to be just like the red, but if not, I will be sure to let you know)

an updated pic to show how crazy this little seedling is...surprised to see how dense, and profuse the flowering is, at such a young age and small size. it has flowers all over the place.

I will keep posting little updates on this little tree, until it stops flowering or until it makes some fruit.

(I'm praying it's noticeably different than the Red Jaboticaba, but I have low expectations)

Yes for sure...mostly the Reds, and Grimals, which take about 2-3 yr to flower (appreciable fruit production is not achieved during the first few years of flowering)

Strigipes flowered 1st year of grafting...looks like I will get a good crop by this year (3rd year since grafting)

Also have had several other varieties that flowered quickly, but have yet to set fruit, maybe the 3rd year will be a charm for them as well.

Still patiently waiting (3yrs now) since grafting cambuca and trunciflora (from mature wood)...also waiting for coronata (wood was not fully mature).

The time it takes a grafted tree to flower depends on several factors, including the variety, and maturity of budwood.

I see some fruit set.

I have seen several red jaboticabas that fruited very early, but never saw a seedling so small that produced such an abundance of flowers...they are usually about 1ft taller, with a stem 2-3 times as thick, with only a few flowers, on a few isolated patches.

this little tree is going crazy.

Honestly I don't know if this seedling is just a red jaboticaba, or something else

I got the seeds about 3 yr ago from a friend who got fruit from a collector in south FL.

if the fruit tatse different than the red jabo, I will start to propagate this tree via grafting....but I will also plant all the seeds to see how long they take to fruit. It would be nice to find a new precocious variety, other than the red and escarlate.

Adam at this time I don't have any jaboticaba so it would be nice to get a tree if the fruit quality is good. You seem to be able to grow and fruit them quite well in large containers. I recently found a source in LA for containers up to 65 gallon, so that wouldn't be any trouble at all. Like I said earlier, please do keep us updated if you have plants for sale . I for one am very interested.

was just looking at the group of seedlings that I planted (from which this precocious tree came from)....and I notice the new growth is quite different than the Red jaboticaba

I knew I had them labeled as being special for some reason....they all had a pink ribbon around the base of the tree...and were separated from the rest of my red jabo seedlings...

I will try to post pics soon to show the difference.

there is a good chance this is something other than the Red jaboticaba...

i had got mine from PIN ax a 3gal in spring of 2014
put it in a 7gal pot right away, a couple of weeks later i took the first pic.

it gave me 6 fruits about 6 or 7 weeks ago. it flowered again right after,
but those died as i forgot to water it.
right after that, it put out more flowers, and now i have 5 fruit on the tree.

from the top of the container to the top of the plant cant be more than 3.5 ft.
it certainly got wider though.

ive chopped at least 20 root suckers from the ground since i got it.
is that normal Adam ?
