2016 Eugenia collection Flying Fox Fruits
« on: March 29, 2016, 07:00:25 PM »
Spring is in the air, the Eugenias are blooming nicely

Now blooming (or soon to be blooming)
E. involucrata
E. pyriformis
E. reinwardtiana
E. mattosii
E. itaguahiensis
E. brasiliensis
E. pitanga
E. uniflora
E. ligustrina
E. calycina
E. candolleana
E. selloi
E. luschnathiana
E. florida
(i think that's all? but maybe I'm forgetting one?  :-\ )

here are some pics!

first flowers E. brasiliensis seedling in ground

E. pitanga in ground, one of 4 flowering for the 2nd year...fruited last year...very tolerant of heat and poor soil

E. itaguahiensis (one of 5, in 10-15 gal pots, flowering for 2nd year, very tolerant of heat, delicious fruit just like Grumixama, but a smaller plant)

E. calycina (one of 7 seedlings, in 10-15 gal pots, approx 3yr old, from Miguel in Portugal, I believe they are all flowering for the first time this year, the flowers smell amazing, like clean laundry)

will try to post more pics of other Eugenias as they set fruit...really hoping for a decent crop on the E. pyriformis (sweet type), and E. involucrata (grafted Ben's Beaut, large fruited type)

Very nice Adam, that itaguahiensis looks amazing. They definately more attractive than grumis. Keep the photos coming. I have candolleana fruit first time this year aswell as pitanga, hardy little plant just pumpin out the flowers. Have pitangatuba from you flowering first time also. Do any of yours have crinkly leaves? One of mine has very crinkly looking leaves but its not disease or deficiency it just thrives like that. Hopefully get corg fruit next and I reckon I will get fruit off Florida next time aswell.

thanks Starch and Don

yes the E. selloi has highly variable foliage, and fruit...all of them have been delicious...although I have one tree that makes extremely tart fruit.

There are so many kinds to select from... If you could choose which would be your favorites and why?

Good size fruit & a lot of it.

E. uniflora

Hi Adam

Congratulations!... you will probably be the first one to fruit a seedling of my calycina worldwide!

My Calycina is totally loaded with flowers this year... waiting for a record harvest for 2016.... check these pics:

And now a novelty for 2016... first flowers on my Eugenia blasthanta... fingers crossed for first fruits on this species.

Looks like E. reinwardtania and E selloi are budding out and will flower soon...both pretty small so not sure about fruit set.  CORG, pitomba, and grumchama still haven't flowered.  E. uniflora is holding fruit.

thanks again to everyone for the kind words.

Miguel,

i'm so excited about this Eugenia you introduced me to.

I have grown E. calycina before, but it was a different variety, and very difficult to keep alive...(i'm wondering if they are actually separate species?)

the ones you have are a dream come true!

and btw, the grafted tree I made, on E. involucrata rootstock, has grown exceptionally well..its almost as tall as the mother tree already!  I planted it in the ground a few weeks ago.

I'm going to be selling a small batch of grafted trees this year, and they are not going to be cheap!  lol...and if the trees make fruit, I'm keeping all the seeds to plant!   ;D

I noticed the bees pollinating the flowers today...so I have my fingers crossed!

fsanchez2002

thanks for reminding me!

I have two forms of E. stipitata flowering size...but not flowering now!  Sorry no E. victoriana...for some reason, I never was interested in that fruit...maybe because it's not from Brazil...?  :D

Congratulations Adam , I am proud of you and a little jealous that you managed to have the E. calycina flowering already , my biggest is over 1 meter and as of yesterday still no flowers .

Curious how this E. ligustrina will turn out and also Miguel's E. blasthanta.....sign me up both of you for seeds when available ....

I had a little surprise also , an E. observa that was sitting in the shade still in nursery bag had fruit , those in the ground and full sun not....small and cute fruit , nice taste ...all the seeds were planted again .

an almost ripe, red fruit got knocked off the tree by a bird today..I assume a cardinal

I'm going to have to protect the fruit from wildlife.

I tasted the fruit, and it was nice, even when eaten early...so far reminds me of cherry of rio (which isn't a surprise)

will post pics if and when i can get some of the fruit to fully ripen.

Eugenia ligustrina (Privet stopper) native to Caribbean...fruiting for the first time...
I believe this little plant is about 3yr old...a couple fruit set...it's about 10 inch tall or so...in one gal pot

thanks to my friend (who sent me the seeds as a gift!) I hope you're out there reading this!  ;)
