Branching after Pruning / Tipping
« on: August 09, 2012, 08:50:49 PM »
On average, how long does it tend to take for a young mango tree to respond and grow new branches after tipping? The area where I cut is now looking like it has been burnt. I was just wondering because I am starting to think I did it incorrectly.

Normally it will take a three or four weeks to see some growth. You should not have burnt looking tips though can you post a photo so we can get a better idea of what is happening?

This has happened to some of my young trees that I've trimmed. Didn't seem to make any difference to the tree - still sprouted new branches just fine. But does look a bit odd.

As Tony stated, please post picture(s).

I would truly say it depends on the variety as to how fast it flushes after topping/pugging.  I have seen some take more than four weeks and some in as little as ten days to two weeks.  A lot would also depend on the water and fertilization being applied.

I shouldn't have said burnt. I meant it looks a bit like dark, dry sap. I suck at this stuff, thats all.

That sounds normal then and I would not worry about it. Just give the tree a few weeks to do its thing.

I tipped my Cogshall after the mangos were done and it took about six weeks to get a new flush.  Once it began to flush the growth rate has been impressive.
