I'm considering getting a 'Morena' sapodilla tree.

Question: Do I have this right?

'Morena' sapodilla, when compared to 'Hasya' and 'Tikal' (I have both) is:

Much larger fruit than 'Tikal' and about as productive?

Slightly less-large (smaller) fruit than 'Hasya,' but much more productive?

If the above is true and quality of 'Morena' is good, then it's a must have, IMO.

P.S.   The saying that Sapodilla tastes like Brown-Sugar is a good descriptive approximation of the taste. However, having said that, this description does not do justice to the taste of an excellent quality, perfectly ripened sapodilla, IMO.
'Virtue' should be taught, learned and propagated, in order to save others and oneself.

I wish I had planted a tikal.  Jeff says it has two fruiting seasons per year.

Two seasons is more than likely climatic. I had Tikal and rate it average in flavor with average production as well, Never produced two crops here for me either. Molix seems to be the best over here on the West coast with superior flavor and production.

I much prefer a Morena or Alano to a Tikal.  Its way more productive than Hasya and fruit is smaller (but bigger than Alano...probably best said in the middle).

How does Silas Woods compare to Alano and Morena?

IMO,  Alano is the best.   Morena is very very good too, noth better in quality than SW.  Alano is eaualr or greater in productivity to SW but SW produces better than Morena.

I've seen 'Morena' have a very heavy crop, in a rather short season.   'Alano' has a much more spaced-out season.

Growing SW and Alano, both are in ground and about 6 to 7 feet now and both are flowering. SW already has a few decent sized fruit on it. Pretty little trees.

You cannot lose with SW, it pumps out fruit nearly year round (the only cultivar that can really boast that) with high quality smooth fleshed fruit and never any grit.  Alano on the West coast does not do very well from what I have seen, actually considered a poor producer!

SW does not produce year round on this side. It also does not beat the taste of Alano here.

I believe your opinion on taste. Love to hear more voices on flavor comparisons between the two over there.  SW produces 4 crops here, you cannot beat that!  I personally like most of them unless they have grit! Molix also beats Morena in production and flavor over here for the most part. If Morena out produced Molix, I would have one for sure since its flavor is plenty good.  Production means a lot when one can only have so many trees in their yard!

I have an Alano in Sarasota.  It produces very well, from May through September at least.

At Fruitscapes on Pine Island, Silas Woods and Makok are dwarf trees that produce heavily, for several months.  Their Molix trees also produce very well, but not as heavily as Dolas Woods and Makok.  Alano at my house in Sarasota produces about as well as their Molix trees.

Oxkutzcab produces poorly.  Excalibur produces pretty well at Fruitscapes, maybe a bit less than Molix.

Brad

Over here, it produces Jan/Feb thru June and can have stragglers through the summer.

Glad to hear your opinion on SW flavor profile. I feel the same, it is very rich with plenty of brown sugar flavor when ripened properly.

Hey Brad in Osprey!  Sounds like you have a Makok, not an Alano. Makok bears from May - Nov and Alano from Nov - June!

Hi beefyboy.

Its interesting how they've got those months wrong at least for my area .  Mine is definitely Alano.  It's a great choice.  Rich maple syrup type sweet taste.

Very interesting Brad!  I have the Makok myself, figured you did but guess not. Where did you get yours?

Sapodillas have a very different time table in SoCal. The earliest would be Alano in June and SW as late as November......and most overlapping in sept and October, much shorter season than south Florida.

It's been so warm the past two winters in Florida, my sapodillas are producing 2-3 crops a year including haysa, SW, and
one I am not sure of. I bought it from a nursery that the owner died and his sister was selling off the stock. It had
MAK on the side but the fruit is not long and pointed it looks like SW but is much sweeter.  My haysa has 5 half grown
fruit now and is flowering. All 3 of my SW are full of different size fruit and they are constantly flowering. My morena flushed
out and is starting to flower as well. I have never had a sapodilla I didn't like.

The MAK is most likely Makok.  Is the fruit egg shaped and on the smaller size?

Rob...does the Alano need pollinators?  I had a beautiful one and for several years produced gobs of flowers, but never once set fruit.  Ended up pulling it out to make room for others.  Any thoughts?
