Cherimoya prices skyrocketing
« on: December 02, 2017, 01:55:25 PM »
I’ve been purchasing Cherimoyas from the local markets for years and have noticed a steady rise in the price per pound but this year, it’s reached an all time high. The American grocery stores are selling Cherimoyas for $10+ a pound and even my local Asian market has marked up the price from $4.99/pound to $6.99/pound.

How’s the price elsewhere? The farmers markets still have reasonable prices for their “B” grade Fruit, $3.99/pound and last time I checked their “A” grade was going for $4.99-5.99/pound depending on the vendor.

I haven’t checked Whole Foods but they are probably the most expensive. This is an Excellent backyard fruit because it’s easy to grow, not readily available in the markets and the varieties in the markets are very limited.

i think ranch99 has it for $8-9/lb.  it feels good to get it from your own backyard for free.  i got a few fruits ripening now. All started from seeds several years ago. 5 trees are fruiting now.  Not very much, ranging from 2-5fruits per tree.

They should start producing a lot more once the trees are fully mature. Cherimoya trees can get huge and you can easily get over 100 fruit on an established large tree. Annonas are definitely worth planting. Did you get any exceptional tasting fruit from your seed grown trees?

Here in South Africa, the prices for lettuce skyrocketed.  The one week it was about R10 a head.  This past week, it is R24 a head.

I checked the farmers market in Hillcrest here in SD.  The price for Cherimoya is $7.00 lb. for A grade.  I think they had Honeyhart and some Pierce.  That is up from last winter at $4.99 lb.  I'll check the farmers market in Linda Vista later in the week.

Frank, I agree that we need to diversify and try other types of Annonas. I’m super excited about Leo Manuel’s Cherimoya/Atemoya hybrid as well as the Annona Rosada. The color of the Annona Rosada is absolutely beautiful and I dream about one day seeing Cherimoya, Atemoya and Illama on display at a local farmers market.

one tree has 5 fruits. The rats/squirrel drop all of them to the ground. I found only 4 and 1 missing. And one was eaten at the bottom about 1/6th of the way.  I cut it off and eat , it was very good  flavors, sweet and acidic and seems to have the same flavors as the parent. Share a 2nd one today with my sis, this one seems to somehow has more seeds than the previous one. Mom ate the other two, she said one has lots of seeds, and the 2nd one has less seeds.  Not sure why some has more seeds than others. Maybe because I hand pollinated it with a mix of different trees.

one of the tress has fruits that looks like atemoya, very pointy and sticks out , not sure if it's cherimoya or atemoya.  Mom ate that one and she says very good. less sees, sweet and acidic, and flavorful.

I need to protect the rest of the fruits so the rats/squirrel don't get to them as they are still not ready to pick yet.

They are available in Ohio at "Jungle Jim's International Market" fluctuating between $7-$9. They don't seem to sell well, and I often times see them at a reduced price that is still ridiculous for a practically inedible fruit (Practically zombie-like fruit). I guess they don't sell as well where I am because people aren't familiar with them or don't know how to eat them.. I don't want to waste my money on an overpriced, mediocre-quality fruit, when I can try growing my own. They don't always look great, and also are picked earlier since they wouldn't ship well. I wouldn't want to be disappointed.

I also paid $9/lb at fruit specialty store in Westminster, CA.
She said it’s locally grown, it tasted ok; my own Dr. White and Honey heart
are a lot better...
By the way, some members here saying that Cherimoya from Chili
are really bad, and I agree, I wouldn’t buy those again, having
bought some of those myself in the past...

Got some fruits at poway farmers market and ate one today 6.99 per pound.  Was very good with few seeds.  Too ma y seeds ruins it.  I can't speak on Chilian cherimoya but their avocados are terrible.  Will never buy them, they are always black and or stringy inside.

+1, don't buy them very bland, grainy and no flavor.
$9.99 a pound and a ton of seeds.

I bought it from H-Mart in Buena Park and Irvine

There's a stick on it with ID wrapped in Foam.

If you purchase an imported Chilean Cherimoya you will most likely think you do not like to eat Cherimoya fruit. I don't know if they pick too early or have a treatment process for importing but they are always nasty and never ripen properly the 5-10 I've bought over the years.
Finding someone that ships from California is the way .

Frankly cherimoyas have always been really expensive in California. I remember 30 years ago when i lived there they sold for 5-6 dollars a pound. A lot higher priced than now if you figure in that the dollar was worth a lot more back then. But i was pleasantly surprised when i moved to Hawaii and found them for 2-3 dollars a pound. I don't really understand why because they are not widely grown here either.

True.  Back in the 80's they were that expensive.

back in 1998-99 when I was i college in San Luis Obispo, I used to buy it for $2/lb at the farmers market.  I would buy a box full of it to take home to my mom.  Now, I think it's also $6/lb at the same farmers market.

production has been dropping year after year. This year my Behl 10-yr old tree produced about 20-25 of which nearly 15 or more are over 2lb easy, exceptional flavor this year.
