Dwarf mulchi production
« on: July 30, 2017, 06:01:46 PM »
I originally got this material from Jim West a few years ago.  In my experience it performs best in some shade. It probably started fruiting about 3 years ago when it was only .5m tall.
The fruit is nice, not sour at all.

Nice, Peter, thanks for posting.  How tall is the tree in the pic?  How old was it when it started fruiting at .5 m?

Thanks for Sharing Peter, is it anyway similar to Cambuca, in the case you have tried Cambuca before, I found some similarities among them but never try either..

The tree, or bush in the photo, is, at the most 1.5m.  Dwarf mulchi is a very slow starter here and could take 3-4 years, maybe 5 for the seedling to get to .5m and begin flowering.  It doesn't take up much space at all and the ten year old tree can actually produce a lot of fruit.
Hola Raul, I have never had cambuca so can't make any comparison.

Finca La Isla,
thank you for the report...congrats
i have a small favor to ask,
i seem to have got my Plinias from Jim West confused,
i have the giant and dwarf, but not sure which is which,
i believe the dwarf is much harder to grow, and has a less glabrous, more pubscent,
and more membranous leaf, than the giant form.

can you post pics of the foliage of your dwarf?  maybe old growth and fresh growth if possible?

Hi Adam, the dwarf mulchi is not a plinia. Jim West has it labeled as Eugenia sp.

Thanks for the report Peter, that is interesting about it preferring some shade.
Raul, i have tried both cambuca and dwarf mulchi. I like the cambuca more, mostly because it has a lot more pulp.
BTW, i have seeds of dwarf mulchi and also now of Giant mulchi right now for anyone who is interested, you can order from my seed page. I also sell cambuca seeds, but not fruiting right now. What did also just start fruiting is achachairu.http://fruitlovers.com/seedlist.html
Have limited amounts of both dwarf mulchi and giant mulchi, no (standard mulchi right now).
The giant mulchi is Plinia inflata. It is a selection that Jim West made from standard mulchi that has particularly large fruits.

Here's the photos for Flying Fruits.  The dark green leaves are the large mulchi.  The light green corresponds to the dwarf mulchi.  Maybe with even more shade the dwarf would have better looking foliage.  Otherwise the leaves are pretty similar.  These two plants are growing in similar conditions about 15m apart.
I see the dwarf mulchi as a very small fruit tree that you could easily plant underneath another tree that allowed light, dappled shade.  Maybe under a cassia, even a durian.

Looking at Peter's pics I have 2 dwarfs ( in the ground and in shade / filtered light  ) I am sure they are more than 5 years now and the last time I checked still no flowers . When do they fruit in FL Adam ?
