New member intro plus mango variety question
« on: July 03, 2018, 10:38:24 PM »
Hey all,

I'm here in Miami in the middle of mango season and after tasting my first Edward and E-4, I can already feel an obsession brewing.

Right now I have only baby trees of Edward, Angie, Orange Sherbet, and Fruit Punch. I don't have a ton of room left so I've got to be wise about any more additions. I understand SweetTart and Lemon Zest are forum favorites so I'm gonna have to give those a try. Any other favorites you think I should consider?

Also, this is a long shot but I love the flavor of rose: Rose water, Brewster lychee, rose apple - all of it. Are there any mangoes that have a hint of rose in the flavor profile?

Thanks for reading

Gulab-jamun mango is supposed to have a rose water flavor.

I'm not a big fan in rose water myself but a completely ripen Nam Doc Mai sort of reminds of it a bit.

Yes definitely, Sweet Tart!  Since you already have Orange Sherbet, you might skip Lemon Zest.  How about one of the coconut-flavored mangos?  Cotton Candy might be another one with a flavor all its own from all reports.  Dot is another good one (with a peach flavor from my experience and others').

Thanks, everyone.

The gulaab jamun/ gulaab khas sounds great but I can't find a source for it in the U.S. Does anyone recommend any resources?

I think I have to try a few more Nam Doc Mais. I'm not sure that I've had a good one yet but if you've detected rose, it's back on the consideration list.

And I've been waiting to try a cotton candy for a while. Thanks for the heads up on the LZ.

I was given a bag of Sweet Tart mangos last Sunday, and I'll be damned if they don't taste like rose!  I tasted them a few years ago, and that flavor didn't register.  But wow, yes it's there with these!  I had to ask myself who was it that was looking for rose flavor.  Levar, you should definitely plant Sweet Tart!  You won't be sorry.

Gulab Khas and Gulkand are two mangoes that I know of to possess strong rose fragrance and flavor. Gulkand is from Nizam era mangoes and is extremely hard to locate.  Not sure if anyone is even growing these in US 8)

I'm with you, Levar - i like rose flavor/fragrance a lot too.

Dot is excellent in my limited experience but did not detect rose.

I wasn't aware that some mangos possess rose notes so glad to know.

On a side note - i've been following a lot of these discussions lately and I find it interesting that the "hillbilly mango" - pawpaw - has some of the same flavor possibilities, though the breeding is far, far behind that of mango. There are pineapple-flavored varieties, coconut, spicy/cinnamon, etc. So I wonder if rose-flavored genetics are out there :)

Good luck with your trees, Levar.

I brought a few top notch Kesar Mangos in to work about two years ago and some coworkers mentioned that it had a floral or rose taste to it. Kesar is a very piney, strong Indian spice flavored mango but when it is at its peak of perfection with Brix about 20-21%, a floral taste does come out but I would say it’s a stretch of the imagination to say that is specifically a rose taste.

Brewster Lychees do have a wonderful rose/Lychee aroma and taste!

The Brazilian mango "Rosa" has a floral note without the piney flavor.  Too bad it is a bit fibrous, though not nearly as much as a TA.

Just tasted Taralay for the first time recently, and it too has a rose flavor.

Taralay's silky smooth texture amazes.
