Is persimmon a hard tree to grow, in my area?
« on: August 27, 2018, 05:52:20 PM »
Hi,

Over the past 8 years, I've killed 5 persimmon trees. Bought from either Home Depot or Lowe's, both Fuyu and Hasya cultivars. I've tried planting them in different locations in the yard. Slight afternoon shade, full sun, elevated in a mound, at normal depth,..... They all withered at died after several months of nice growth, leafing out,... I suspect overwatering, but not entirely sure. I have one right now that was showing growth through spring and early summer, and the last 2 weeks the leaves wilted, yellowed, and fell. It's next to a jaboticaba that gets regular watering, so maybe too much water flows to the persimmon? I'd appreciate any advice about growing this thing, I'm gonna try again until I succeed.
Thanks,
Trung

Mine died in Central Valley summer as well. I think it needs to be shaded the first year or so.

I killed one from overwatering.  It was a home depot tree.  Got a bare root tree from dave wilsons 2 years ago and it is doing fine.

Not sure who is growing the home depot ones but the dave wilson ones maybe on better rootstocks.

Stupid question -- you sure the tree is not just going dormant? I've come across a few people who thought their persimmon was dead because it dropped its leaves and went dormant for the winter. It is, after all, a deciduous tree.

The article linked is about American persimmons, which yours are not.

My Japanese persimmon only get water from runoff from orchid pots 2' away, twice a week. How much watering your tree get Jabo nearby?

Too soon.  Its still summer in CA.  Persimmon trees still have fruit into fall and winter.  Fruit isnt even turning color down here yet.

When do the leaves start to yellow and drop though?

When the leaves turn chlorotic and yellow its not a good sign.   You can bend yhe wood in a few weeks and see if theres still life in it but sounds like its going to die.  They dont like lots of water.

I must have drowned the persimmon, Lol. The Jabo is in a rootmaker pot, getting water twice daily in the summer, each time 10 minutes. I'll plant a new persimmon tree in a different spot next time.

overwatering is big issue that I also noticed. My neighbor cant grow it and has killed over 3 while mine thrives, difference is I give little water if that, and his is always soaking wet.

bummer. JFE grows their persimmons in giant tree pots and ships in them as well. Trees are really nice.

Many types of plants can be difficult to grow in hot dry climates.
Strategies include partial shade from the intense Summer sun, consistent watering and keeping the soil from getting too dried out (perhaps put down a layer of mulch), possibly wind protection to help prevent too much evaporation from the leaves. Having other plants nearby can help provide shade, lower surrounding temperatures a little bit and increase humidity levels, indirectly resulting in less water stress on the plant.

I picked up a chocolate  persimmon a couple of years ago. Like Brad stated it is a Dave Wilson tree and is doing well . If you go to dave wilson website they list nurseries that carry their products.

Get the tree bare root in January, dont buy one thats been sitting in a pot all summer and plant it now.  It will just go dormant.  Its best to get it on the other end of dormancy when they are waking up and will have spring and summer to get established.  The bare root trees seem to do better than potted ones too in my experience.

Do you have a photo of it? What's around it? How much and how often do you water it?
Thanks,
