A stupid question about jaboticabas
« on: January 30, 2013, 07:18:41 PM »
This is the time before dinner and I always have a shot or 3 of Tequila as an aperitif , sometimes I come up with these great ideas / thoughts , the Tequila maybe.....?
So after the M. trunciflora post this popped in my mind :

Having several jaboticabas fruiting would there be a chance of ending up with a new hybrid , I know this would be a very long shot planting all the seeds ....waiting xxx years ...you know what I mean .

Wow Luc!  You took this conversation way past where I thought you were going with it!  I thought for sure you were going to tell us how you infused tequila with fresh jaboticabas.  Maybe you should start this post over?   :-[

here is why hybridization is hard/rare ( in my opinion)

the plants will pollinate themselves readily,
pretty much as soon as they open,
its hard to isolate the flowers,
the flowers are numerous, and small,
its hard to cross pollinate them,
and
the seeds take a long time to fruit.

other than that, it should be possible in some cases...
I'm sure quite a few hybrids exist out there already...but here is what gets me..

they call the red jabo a hybird (precoe, hibrida, same thing) but the seeds are all true to type with very little variation.  I have my doubts it's a true hybird, maybe it could be a distinct species, or a variant of M. cauliflora.

I haven't dedicated too much effort to breeding, and hybridizing species, but I believe it's a worthwhile effort.

Noel,
Remind me to give you a taste of "licor de jabuticaba" when you come to this coast.
Luc,
You are on the right track!  On the right track to create a very nice tasting licor. Just mix the jabuticaba pulp/skin with some tequila, add a bit of sugar or honey ....put it away for a month or so and voila, jabuticatila   or tequilacaba as Noel wrote.  Make sure to break the skin of the fruits.  If you google "receita de licor de jaboticaba/jabuticaba", you may find several recipes.
I make the "licor de jabuticaba" using cachaca and honey.
Seriously, I think that if you cross pollinate different varieties you may end up with a hybrid.  The current reb/hybrid/precoce  is a cross including the aureana and the cauliflora, I believe.

Hi Luc, if you hand pollinated , marked and tagged, you might have a chance of coming up with a winning hybrid. If you wait for nature to do it, and then expect to find it from the seeds you planted, then i would say you have a better chance of winning the lottery.
I think Berto is right. Make some jaboticaba liquour and you will forgive the jaboticaba plants any of their sins and omissions. Jaboticaba liquour is almighty good. Recher inspired me to try it and it was fabulous! i posted my recipe (a slight variation on Recher's) in the recipe section long ago.

Thanks for reminding me about the jaboticaba port in the cupboard! Its gonna be a fun night tonight!  ;D

Is there enough variation between the species to warrant the laborious process of making hybrids? What characteristics are you looking to combine?

you have to emascualte ...remove stigmas before pollen... keep emascualted flower bagged to avod unwanted pollination... fertilize with colected pollen..bag.... so you got to do something like the above

it seems like a pretty arduous task...emasculating, bagging, pollinating.

Maybe just do a small portion of flowers on a branch?

why haven't they been trying to do this already in Brazil?  Maybe they have, and I'm not aware...but I've not seen any info on the subject...but I'm sure it's out there

I bet it's been tried many times, especially by people with huge jabo plantations. But doesn't mean they're going to publish it. If they do publish it, may not be on internet. If it is on internet would be in portuguese. So many layers to dig it up.

Even if they did create a hybrid, would many notice the difference from the species they already have available?
