Title: Barbie Pink vs. Ruby Supreme Guava
Post by: starch on November 18, 2016, 11:48:25 AM
For those of you who have tasted both of these guavas, how do they compare?
Based on nursery descriptions (which can be suspect) they sound very similar.

I have a small Barbie Pink (and a bunch of others too) and I wanted to see if it was close enough to Ruby Supreme, so that I don't have to hunt down another guava :)

Neither are very good. If I had to choose I would select Ruby Supreme. We use this variety for guava shells and marmalade for it's bright red color. For dessert guavas I prefer Jalisco Red and Dolores these are California hybrids. These reds are creamy sweet and tart with few seeds

Hey JF,

Thanks for the feedback. I did some searching on the forum for your Jalisco Red and Dolores. They sound great! The pics of the Jalisco Red look amazing!

Would you have any cuttings of Jalisco Red and Dolores available? I would love to buy some from you and try rooting a few and grafting a few onto my other guavas (I have a Malaysian Red the I am using sort of as a rootstock, I have grafted a few varieties onto this one).

No problem starch. I'll offer cuttings and budwood of these two varieties in March.

Is it easy to root guava cuttings?

Yes but not for me. Behl is an expert grafting guava scions and he claims it's much easier to graft

Thanks

Look for cuttings and budwood in March 2017. I no longer have grafted trees only scions
