Mango planting question
« on: July 25, 2018, 08:57:40 PM »
I just purchased two mango trees which are much smaller than the size I usually get although in the same size pot. (3 gallon) I'm wondering if I should plant them or let them mature in their pots a little longer. They're about two feet tall.

trees grow faster in ground. you want roots established quickly and not let them swirl around the pot.

It all depends on the size of the pot and the growing conditions of the tree. In your case placing a two-foot tree in a (7) gallon pot and then in 2019 transferring to the ground makes a lot of sense. If weather conditions turn turbulent you can protect the young tree in a pot much easier than one in the ground.

As long as the tree is rooted out in that 3 gal, plant now.  The tree will establish quickly this time of year and will have a far better growth habit over the next year and for down the road (due to early root development) if put in the ground now.  Nothing good will come from holding over in the 3 gal or up-potting till next year.
