Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Extinct Florida Variety Peach Trees?
« on: March 15, 2021, 08:54:15 PM »
People may still have those varieties in the ground somewhere. Likely your best bet. The varieties I usually see available here are UF Sun, Tropic Beauty, Tropic Snow, and Florida Prince.

I’ve been looking for UF Sun, please let me know if you do see/find any

This one is a KAUAI WHITE SUGARLOAF and WHITE JADE.  These are the same cultivar.  This plant gets quite large and will do well in a 7gal pot.  It has smooth leaves, and a white sweet subacid flesh and semi edible core.  The cores are edible but are harder than the surrounding flesh.  This plant is not as cold hardy as some other varieties.  Its a slow grower but does make a decent amount of offsets and slips.  The leaves turn red and purple in the sun.  It is normal and will turn this color even with the same feeding program as other types that stay green.  Some pineapple plants just turn colors and this one does a lot.  This fruit has a brix of 16-17 and low acid making it taste very sweet.

Thank You for the information, Very helpful! Especially confirmation that Kauai Sugarloaf and White Jade are the same!!

I was the person that also ordered from briteleaf and also ordered from backyardcitrus. I believe you’ll have a great experience with them if you liked briteleaf.

This seedling tree has M4, CC, Edgar, Son Pari, and some of the original seedling.

This Phoenix has Mulgoba, CC, & Cac.

You can always add or remove varieties to keep certain varieties around until you decide what you want to do with them or have a more opportune time and place to keep them!!! Hope this helps 😁

Here’s a seedling tree that I top worked and turned into a cocktail tree. I have very vigorous, medium vigorous, and low vigorous varieties on there with some growing faster than others but I just prune back to try and keep them under control.
Varieties on this tree- Sunrise, ShweHinta (raw honey), Kesar, Florigon, Dupuis Saigon, & some of the original seedling in hopes that it fruits sometime soon. I used to have way more varieties on here but I over stressed the tree and lost a bunch from over grafting. My suggestion, add any variety and just trim back anything super vigorous to try and even out the tree size.. no need to limit to specific varieties due to vigor, seems like you’ll miss out on having something you’d want/enjoy due to misinformation

I also drove by a week or two ago and same thing.. I’ve been meaning to ask him about this year through email but still haven’t yet

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: “Karen Michelle” Mango
« on: May 15, 2020, 05:52:39 PM »
John, i was there the other day as well. The sales manager Pho( or Phi, pardon if i spelled wrong) was probably out in the nursery, not  there and could not see Gary either. The two ladies at the desk were there just to collect money after the sale of mangoes. Plus due to Covid they were doing a line outside with only one person in at a time, i bought and left so that others in line get to come in sooner. Had a lot of questions myself regarding release of newer varieties but it just did not seem like the setting die to Covid panic.

Phi is VERY knowledgeable! I was also there recently but decided to pass on Karen Michelle since I have not had it nor know anyone else that has but your description is very intriguing 🧐🤔

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: M4 or Coconut Cream
« on: May 07, 2020, 09:38:04 PM »
M4 wins for disease resistance in my humid fungus-prone location. It sets fruit like a champ. I have quite a few fruit on my young M4 tree. Coconut Cream barely produced for me before my 15ft tree was killed by Irma, snapped at the graft. I have no desire to plant another Coconut Cream.

Thank You, thank you! Forgot about that disease resistance 🤓

Hi everybody-

I was watching a video of Richard Campbell showing off his home collection and picked up his referencing some of his mangoes being on dwarf rootstock. He seemed to be indicating grafting onto dwarf rootstock was effective for limiting tree size. Anybody have any success with this approach? What dwarf varieties would you recommend? I'm in Sarasota, not many sources around here for particular mango varieties, so I figure I'll need to order a box from somewhere or make a road trip.

BTW, I have a spreadsheet of mango varieties that lists the following as dwarf:
ORANGE ESSENCE
JAKARTA
COTTON CANDY
UGLY BETTY
Graham
JULIE
FLORIGON
ALAMPUR BANESHAN
VENUS
ROSIGOLD
MALLIKA
IRWIN
ICE CREAM
DIAMOND
JULIETTE
FAIRCHILD
HONEY KISS
Neelam
NELPETITE
TOLEDO  (CUBAN)

From one of the videos I’ve seen with Dr Campbell, he uses a “super” dwarfing rootstock he is privy to.

Was it written in recent years, or is it something Walter wrote many years ago?

How about a cocktail tree with MBBS resistant varieties and something that can be picked mature green so mango marauders waiting on a color change can be caught off guard by you taking a step ahead of them?
K3? Son pari? M4? Buttercream? (On top of the Pina Colada! 🤤)

11 year old? (Edward, just recently made aware of the variety)

70
Guava

Why the excitement about May First? This is too soon for sweetness. Mangoes need more sugar pumped into them via solar conversion via the leafy trees they hang from.
June First maybe.

More like April 1st in West Palm.

Watery like a carambola but we all must carry on. But like your otherwise due to your 256. Which amazingly enough is the size of my NVMe in my new and unfolding HP x 17.3"

New as in Nieuw to me. Scored off ebay at an un_boliveeeble_ price

I assure you this Edward I just picked will be anything but watery. Instead It will taste amazing.

If they’re just as amazing as the early ones last year, they’ll blow your mind away with how amazing the coconut flavor came through!! I have a feeling that they’re even better with the lack of rain 🤤🤤🤤

Not familiar with growing a mature tree of RosiGold but fullness of fruit at the bottom and yellowing of the skin should be automatic signs of best time to pick..

73
Homegrown-

Lemon Meringue

Carrie

Cotton Candy

Hoping to try for the first time-

Cotton Candy, Sunrise, Peach Cobbler, White Pirie, ST Maui, Neelam, Carla, Kesar, Edgar, Marlys, White Alphonso, CeciLove, & Lemon Zest (first 2 I tried were washed out last year).

Cool, I've got a ton of DF stuff and new types here.  Just waiting for the weather to clear up to do some planting and cutting sales.

Awesome! Looking forward to seeing them 😁

(Hey Brad, I finally had a chance to pot up the cuttings I picked up from you and Tye at Spicy Exotics. Thank You again!)

The shorter ones have been potted for a few weeks. The taller ones in the 2nd picture were potted 2 days ago
