Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Longan Lovers ^_^

Thank you, Triloba. :)

You know what's funny? I haven't actually tried a lychee or rambutan yet. I may end up liking them, too, but there will always be a special place in my heart for longan. The longan I had fresh in Thailand doesn't even compare to what I can find in the local Asian markets... so far, 95% of those have been well past their prime. They taste a lot different when they are "over ripe". I hope you have the opportunity to try fresh picked longan some time in the future. Your "not crazy about" might just change to "crazy for." :)

Thought I'd give an update on my twin jackfruits... The smaller of the two has nearly caught up with the larger one. The little one was growing up under the shade of the bigger one's leaves, and at one point was starting to try and defoliate its big brother. I decided to put two thin wooden dowels in the pot to tether and separate them a bit so they could both take in the same amount of light. Both seem really healthy, and they definitely look like siblings. There's no way to tell if they are identical without a DNA test (which I cannot afford), but they both have the same number of leaves, and the leaves seem to be growing in almost exactly the same position. All of my other trees have different... what would you call it. Growth patterns? You know they are jackfruit, but the don't look identical in "shape" and leaf number/arrangement.

At least we're in good company, Karen! ;)

I remember watching the King on television last year. -- I think that must have been on his Birthday, because there was a ton of people and a really big parade. Happy Birthday to His Royal Highness! Enjoy the party, bangkok! :)

I miss Thailand this time of year, bangkok. :) I much prefer Thai winter to Michigan winter. I always chuckle at the fact that while I was sweating bullets over there, all of the locals were wearing long sleeved jackets, warm clothes and hats. But you know... I think I will always wear socks over there whether they make me hot or not. Fire ants seem to love me. -- I do not love them back.  ::)

Speaking as a lady who has a forest growing in her bedroom... yeah, I think I can relate. :P Around 30 jackfruit seedlings, 3 longan seedlings (with God knows how many seeds now in zip lock baggies waiting to see if they'll sprout), 1 miracle fruit seed that is sprouting... and though they aren't fruit related, a fellow fruit grower sent me some crazy hot pepper seeds (Trinidad Moruga Scorpion anyone??), 7 of which sprouted. Outdoors doesn't do me any good up here in Michigan... so I sort of foresee the interior of my house looking like a jungle a few years from now.  :o

I'd definitely be open to that. If anyone's interested, just let me know!

That's pretty cool! I've worked on a few films, but no documentaries.

Rule of thumb is, if you say over 3 words on camera, you are supposed to get your name credit (and if it was a SAG production, a taft hartley and a paycheck!).  8)

So is this you, then? It's nice to "meet" ya. :)

mod edit: Had to remove the pic myself. Lol

I bought this on Amazon Prime last night. It was pretty awesome! And I was laughing at the intro where the guys were saying, "Before long it became an obsession, and uh, I was no longer a normal person" and, "it blossomed into a full time case of insanity." -- I definitely found my hook fruits overseas.  ;D

murahilin, I was trying to figure out who you were. :)

Thanks for the tips, Oscar. I think I'm gonna go ahead and try the freezing routine. I want to be able to just have some every now and then, and this seems to be the best option for me.

Thank you very much, Leo! :) Hopefully I will be able to share more videos in the future.

Thank you!

I'd definitely be interested in doing that. Good, fresh tropical fruits are a bit hard to come by in Michigan... but I do love to travel. ^_^

There have been a few posts on jackfruit leaves in the past. I've merged this post with another older post on the same topic.

Please use the forum's Google search on the bottom of the main page of the forum. Many questions have already been answered. The Google search works much better than the forum's standard search.

Oh. I hadn't even noticed the Google search there. I primarily stick to the Discussion and Buy, Sell, Trade forums, which are the first two on the page, so I rarely ever scroll down on the home page. -- (I did give it a good go with the forum search though. ;) I was just using the wrong words: misshapen, irregular, deformed etc.)

Thanks for bringing up this thread though!

Since I forgot to say it earlier, you all are most welcome. :) Hopefully yours will be ready soon, Rtreid!

Question for you guys. Do you ever freeze your extra longan? I've been told you can do that, but I haven't yet. Was wondering what the process was... (since I'm contemplating ordering another box). Also, how do they taste after being frozen?

Most of them, yes! The ones in the first picture, the one I am opening up, and the ones I have displayed on the white board (whole fruit, half fruit with seed exposed, and then just the seed) are all Biew Kiew. The ones in the bowl in front of the window though, I cannot state for sure which variety those are. I found those at my local Asian market weeks ago (and weren't nearly as fresh as the Biew Kiew).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Irregular Leaf Formations in Jackfruit?
« on: December 02, 2013, 01:14:24 PM »
I searched the forum but couldn't quite find what I was looking for. Of my many Michiganian Thai Jackfruit trees... three of them have grown some irregularly shaped leaves. Nothing has really changed, other than I was without a grow light for a few days (which has helped me weed out which are the healthier trees in my "forest"). Have not added in any new fertilizers or anything special. Temperature has remained the same. Watering was a little too heavy for a while, but has since evened out. Could this have been from that short period of over-watering? Or would it maybe be a genetic anomaly? Other than the odd shaped leaves, these three seem to be healthy.

^ That last little guy seems to know he's from Michigan. ^_^

I have had so many people ask, "what's that?" when I tell them my favorite fruit is longan. So I finally decided to do a quick little video to show them. Thought some of you guys might get a kick out of it. ;) -- Make sure to turn the quality up to 1080p HD. :)

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Where To Buy Tropical Fruit Online

Gladly. :) I'd like to try all of the different varities, when I get a chance.

I'm also on the hunt for someone that ships jackfruit (preferably a deeper orange with a stronger, sweeter flavor). So if you know anybody who has an overabundance of those at some point during the year and is willing to ship, please let me know!

Hmm. Thank you both for your replies. I appreciate the input! We're looking into both the Vegetronix and the Tensionmeters.

Notice the prominent disclaimer on the box stating clearly the prohibition of shipment to Florida.

I have yet to find any Florida growers willing to ship to me up here in Michigan. Maybe it's just one of those fruits that can't enter or exit your state? I dunno. I would have loved to buy some from Florida, but then, I wouldn't have found these guys.

I am happy to report that my order from the Hula Brothers arrived today, as scheduled!

There was no sort of padding in the box, but that doesn't seemed to have caused any issues with the fruit what so ever.

There was a certificate included that disclosed their irradiation treatment.
(For those curious, some of the seeds are sprouting anyway!)

And then there was some lovely brochures and nutritional information cards included.

Side 1:

Side 2:

These are, without a doubt, the most fresh, juiciest, biggest and best longan (Biew Kiew) that I have eaten since I was in Thailand!

I will totally be buying from these guys again in the future!

Edited to add: Photo of size comparison

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Recommendations on moisture meters?
« on: November 27, 2013, 01:56:40 PM »
Letting my girls water a few of my trees has turned out to be rather... fruitless. *ahem*.  ::) They are not quite understanding the difference between moist and wet, so I am looking into getting a moisture meter. Does anyone else use one for their tropical fruit trees? If so, what brand? I'm hoping to find a very accurate and reliable model that won't break easily (considering the target consumers, a.k.a., my kids). I am willing to dish out a little more cash for a better model, but I don't want to go super crazy (as in, over $50).

Thanks in advance!

Treated myself to an early Christmas present. I ordered 8lbs of fresh Longan last night from these folks:

http://www.hulabrothers.com/store/cart.cgi?action=link&product=3, who are a part of these folks: http://plantithawaii.com.

I checked out with PayPal and received an immediate "Thank You" email confirmation. My order is supposed to be processed and mailed out next Monday, and I should be enjoying super fresh clusters of my all time favorite fruit by Wednesday. ^_^ They grow both Biew Kiew and Sri Chompoo, but I put in a request for Biew Kiew (as I think this was most likely the variety I fell in love with over in Thailand). I will post some photos when they come in!
