rollinia growth rate
« on: March 16, 2015, 09:58:34 PM »
this might be a hard question to answer (or has already been answered in another thread).  i have been told that from seed to first fruiting can expect to take around 3 years.  If that is the case, what kinds of sizes are we talking about?  for example, i germinated some rollinia seedlings in November.  right now, they plants are about anywhere form 8-12 inches tall.  they're in 1 gallon pots.  is that normal/fast/slow?  and if it's at year 3, what kind of size tree am i looking at?

That's normal considering you started it in cooler part of the year. They can start fruiting when about 6 feet tall. Yes they are fast growers and fruiters if given ideal conditions.

exact dates are 6/12/14 and 2/21/14 haha if you want.. yeah, they seem to grow really fast under the hot sun.. however, getting them to fruit would be another matter.. I can grow it probably to 50 ft and still don't have fruit if we don't better humidity here..

Do you notice any die back in the winter followed by a regrowth in the spring?

well, last year was my first one, so I can't really speak.. but if you take a look at the 2nd picture closely, there is dieback (the branches turn black) on many of the branches.. the tiny leaves all around are the new growth for this year.. since this is a picture from last month, there have been plenty of new leaves and they have been growing out even from the black branches.. from all the way at the top too..

is there a website for history temps, then maybe I can show you what it dropped down to.. I think around mid 30's or so..

well mine have been growing underneath the shade of a tree till now. so probably pretty soon will have to start taking them out for full sun to get them ready for prime time.  luckily/unluckily, we have the humidity here.  but good to have some point of reference.

I can only imagine the difficulty of shipping rollinia to California. I have hard time hand carrying it from hilo to Honolulu!
