Tropical Fruit Discussion / how well do jaboticaba's handle wind?
« on: June 18, 2020, 12:50:36 AM »
I'm getting a new Jaboticaba and was wondering how well they handle wind? I have two spots in the yard for it. One spot gets less sun (4-6 hours) but is sheltered from wind. Another spot gets more sun (6-8 hours) but some days it gets pretty windy. I'm trying to decide where to put it.
Thank you

Hi all tree experts,
I need alittle help. I just purchased these two small grafted Jaboticaba and Sapodilla trees. They were shipped to me in California from Florida. I got the trees about a week ago and they looked to be in great condition on arrival. I repotted both plants to slightly larger pots with minimal trauma. They looked healthy when I got them and repotted them. I repotted them into 5 gallon containers with a mixture of well draining citrus potting mix and general potting mix with a tiny bit of fertilizer mixed in. The trees are placed next to each other in a spot in the yard that gets about 6 hours of sun and I supplement with a few growth lights. Over the week I have noticed the Sapodilla leaves at the base are starting to turn a lighter shade of yellowish green. The Jaboticaba is starting to develop some rust discoloration at the tips of the leaves and black spots on some leaves. (see the pictures below)
1. Can anyone tell me whats going on and should I be concerned?
2.What should I do to correct the problem before its too late?
Thank you

I'm looking to buy a sweet tart mango tree on a suitable root stalk for Southern California/ LA zone 10b. Any one have any possible leads?

I already have a "Frederick" Passion fruit vine that is doing great in my yard. I want to add to the passion fruit collection with a couple other passion fruit variety's that are different from my current Frederick variety (different colored flowers, different colored fruit, sweeter fruit, larger fruit...........)

I'm wondering if there are some varieties that grow better in southern California that I should consider adding to my yard?
Can I put 3 or 4 different passion fruit vine varieties in a large 22inch diameter by 22in tall planter and have them all climb along a trellis on a wall and will they do ok?

Thank you

I'm thinking about getting a mango tree that will be placed in a large container (22 Inch diameter) in a spot in a small yard that gets sun most of the day in coastal southern California.

Taking into account best tasting fruit(sweet and complex), least fiber, most productive, small size tree and hardy tree. What mango varieties should I consider and is there one that is hands down the best to get if I only have space for one tree?
Thank you

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting multi variety wax jambu
« on: May 19, 2020, 01:21:00 AM »
I have a still small black diamond wax jambu tree and limited yard space.  Can I graft a second variety of wax jambu onto my current tree? If so, what is a good tasting green variety and white variety i can try grafting to my tree? And anyone know where I might be able to get some scions?

Hi, I just bought a citron tree and want to try grafting some kumquat buds grafts or cleft grafts to see if I can have a layer of kumquat's below the higher up citrons. See the pictures attached of the tree I just bought. There are two small branches starting around the area where I would want the kumquat branches. Are these small spouting branches from the citron trunk or from the root stock? Can i try cleft grafting to these small branches or should I cut them off and try placing bud grafts on the trunk?
Thank you

Citrus General Discussion / Multigrafting question
« on: May 12, 2020, 02:38:16 AM »
I have limited yard space with a healthy meyer lemon tree that is about 5 feet tall P in a large planter.  I want to experiment with ordering budwood and grafting 1 or 2 different citris varieties on to it for fun.  I have done some internet research and I understand the different types of grafts. Cleft grafting seems like it would be the easiest for me.  My question is where and what type of branch is the best branch to cut short and try a Cleft graft? A branch near the root stock?  A branch near the top of the tree that is branching diagonally?  A branch near the top that is branching out horizontally? A sucker coming off the root stock?  Or is a different type of great better to try in my situation?

If I try a bud graft or t graft  should I try it on the root stock or the main trunk of the meyer lemon tree or a branch from the tree?
Thank you
