Your best mangoes this year ( 2013 )
« on: July 05, 2013, 03:35:39 PM »
I finally had the opportunity to sample many varieties I was curious about. some were very delicious.

Here are some "new ones" that I really enjoyed,  each one has a unique flavor characteristic.

In no particular order.
St Maui
Carrie
Maha Chanok
Hatcher

I had plenty of other good ones, but those above really left a mark.

Still many I need to sample yet. like LZ, CC, Angie, Dot. etc.

I know we still have some season left , but what have been the mangoes that have blown you away this year?

My favorite Mangos this year, so far at least...have been Lemon Meringue and Carrie. Both types were really at the top of their game this season.

1. Pickering. (big and stinkin delicious. want more.)
2. Bailey's Marvel. (big, nice flavor, from 2 sources, both stood out of 15-20 different cvs.)
3. Hawaiian Dawrf. (like a top notch Julie but bigger. negative is seems more anthracnose prone and can get mushy).
4. East Indian. (big, excellent flavor and juicy but really too much work to eat- even for an Island's guy like me)
5. Nam Doc Mai (regular). (flavor varried from likeness to vanilla waifers to hints of caramel, big and very sweet.)

bonus:
Big dissapointment:
Glenn. Had a couple from two sources... I do not care for it. Bland and boring tho big and colorful.
The thin skinnedness of it just bothers the hell out of me.

No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

my first Kent mango off my tree this year
a squirrel took some big bytes out of it but it was still hanging on the tree and it was hard but since it was this years first...... so i cleaned it up. put it in my parked car down by the floor in a container....the heat ripened it in one day.    so delicious full taste the best 2013 mango

My Glenns were awful this year

Carries were very good and abundant and two crops of them after producing nothing for a few years
I had a chunk of Lemon Zest that was very good and was orange sherbet tasting

Maha Chanok
Hatcher ( I know, but the one I had at Harry's was incredible)
Dot

Lots of others were close, but I would say those 4 stand out as blowing me away.

Sleepdoc,  with a few simple keystrokes you have saved my young Maha from being displaced by my new Peach Cobbler (aka O-2).

I guess Valencia Pride will have to bite the dust.

And while your there, ask for the Huckleberry Pie mango.  If they don't have it, tell them they need to get it asap.

That Hatcher we sample at Harry's place  was one of the best mangoes I have ever eaten.  my question though is consistency in quality,  was the one we sampled a rare occurrence ? or is there just a lot of variability in the quality.

I can understand removing the VP, its not a bad mango but it is hard to control, and gets huge fast.
but why would you even consider the MC. if I could only have 3 varieties growing, I would make sure to have a Maha Chanok.  its compact growing, pretty looking, and tastes out of this world.

This year's Maha Chanoks were slightly smaller than other year's fruits but were particularly good in eating quality/flavor. The exteriors of many became marred in a way that is not usual for my usual production.  However, apparently the combination of dry and rain that we had had the flavor pretty much at its peak, despite is unattractive exteriors.

This was the best year for my Hatcher tree both in production and flavor of the fruits.  I have had fruits in other years that were no where good as this year's crop's flavor.  The fruit that SleepDoc and TropicDude had at my house was also refrigerated for the better part of a week after it ripened.  I am going to have to do some more experimentation to see if that was the reason for the particularly good eating experience we had.

I had Dot and Valcarrie at Lara Farms and they were amazing.

Had a mango at Zill's that was incredible. I think the name was Andrea. They had them in a basket in their office and they offered me some. Glad I tried them.

Yeah, Dot's got to be in the mix for top billing.  Very, very limited production for me this year. Re: Valcarie, I have never had one that I thought that much of.  I don't grow it.  I actually turned down a free tree once.  Maybe I've just been unlucky.

Never thought much of Valcarrie until I had it with Julian at his place. I liked it so much that I planted a Valcarrie, and a Carrie. IMO definitely worth having in my collection.

While I was fruit shopping at Excalibur today Rob was kind enough to tell me they had just gotten some of these, as well as some Ugly Bettys.

(Harry, please don't be too hard on us. These days addiction is considered a disease.)

William, the only reason I was considering trashing the Maha is that I've never tasted it and the tree has not been a fast grower for me.

Of course, I haven't tasted O-2 either, but Rob's description of it a while back made my toes curl up and my eyes roll back.   ::)

4. Gary
5. Jakarta - on ground at fruit and spice
5. Nam Doc Mai - Excalibur
6. Valencia pride - Robert is here

PPK, Dot, and Southern Blush were the best for me.
Sweet Tart and Pineapple Pleasure were also great.

I've had almost 40 varieties this year... So far!

Hands down, Fairchild.

When it comes to a classic quality mango, the Hatcher is right up there as one of the best I've ever eaten.

val-carrie is a phenomenal mango. I'm glad I didn't listen to the wisdom / opinions posted on the forum and went ahead and planted mine. Once I got to try it, I planted another :-). It's one of my favorites. Like any mango, val-carrie can have a bad day, but a good / well-ripened one is incredible.

I'm surprised no one has said Cushman.  I bought it untasted just on reputation.  I hope I didn't make a mistake.

The best for me on my trip to Florida were:

Dot - amazing!
Gary - very unique taste
Valencia Pride
