Paint or seal cut limb area?

Do any of you paint after cutting limbs or try sealing a slightly rotted looking old cut?
If so, what do you use?  Thanks.

When my persimmon tree split due to lightning, I painted the broken area with watered down white paint. Nothing special about the paint.
