Top 3 mango's to grow in broward county, fl.
« on: May 14, 2016, 06:36:44 PM »
I know this may be crazy to ask. But if you had to pick 3 mango's to grow in South Florida which varieties would the mango educated choose? My plan is to get a jump on grow out on some harder to find trees including mango, before purchase of a house. I'm going more for quality/flavor, and disease resistance verse production.

Maha Chanok, Pickering and Sweet Tart. IMO Maha Chanok satisfies all four of those criterias. Clusters of beautiful, ergonomic fruit :D.

No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

I believe that Lemon Zest would be a good candidate as well. I would possibly plant Lemon Zest, Sweet tart and Maha Chanok based on the reviews that I've read through lurking this forum.

Yah, I was just going to say that :-). LZ + MC + ST would be my three. Pickering is also a great choice, but LZ wins in the taste dept.

1- Sweet Tart for excellent flavor
2- Pickering and Fairchild for disease free and reliable
3- Coc and Lemon Zest for flavor but slightly below Sweet Tart

I would plant Sweet Tart/Pickering/Fairchild......
... for the fourth one Maha Chanok, Coc or Lemon Zest

My plan is to get a jump on grow out on some harder to find trees including mango, before purchase of a house.
Very good idea! So buy them at three gallon, grow in pots and plant them when you buy house at fifteen or twenty five gallon.

I think you should try to plant at least four to stretch out the season--one early, one late, and two mid-season.  Pickering ripens in June so it should get the nod for the early one.  The fruit tastes great with coconut tones, and it's a beauty of a tree.  And is there a better truly late mango than Keitt, which is a workhorse of a tree with huge tangy delicious mangos?  Any other nominees for late mango?

I haven't run across a lot of information on Cac / Coc  regarding flavor or other characteristics. Could you or zands help me out?    I'm wondering where I can plant the one I've had sitting in a pot for too long.

After tasting dozens last couple of years from different places and the help of a few people on here. I ended up planting PPK, CC, Fairchild, and Pickering. I have a carrie I am using as an experimental in a pot, but will probably scratch her from the yard eventually since I was edumacated by Rob and found so many better 'goes to eat.

It's interesting that there are those who prefer PPK to Lemon Zest.  I've tasted a few Lemon Zest and many PPK but all from the same tree (which isn't well situated or taken care of).  I want to try additional Lemon Zest, but so far I find PPK to be an outstanding, incomparable mango.  Although a small fruit, it's a flavor bomb.

I've read other members report that Venus, Beverly and Honey Kiss are "good quality" late mangoes.

I think I'm leaning towards this combo, depending on lot size we'll see what else I can squeeze in.

It's in the "very good" class along with varieties like Dupuis Saigon, Fairchild, Bailey's Marvel, etc . The production potential looks very high and the disease resistance is strong. They're fairly vigorous growers with spreading canopies. Like Maha Chanok and Fairchild it appears to be a hybrid between a poly SE Asian type and an Indian-descended cultivar. It's mono embryonic.

PPK = Po Pyu Kalay, a Burmese mango also called "Lemon Meringue".

Cac isn't an abbreviation and is a mango from Vietnam.

Agree on Cac. Very delicious mango with high production and great disease resistance.

I'm confused by PPK over Lemon Zest preference. I'll bet that the tree(s) from which the forum members obtained their samples from (Walter's / Gary's ?) had a bad / washed out year last year. PPK is definitely outstanding, but Lemon zest are more strongly flavored and larger. It's beneficial to have both though, since PPK is earlier. I have the complete collection -- 3 LZ, 1 PPK, and a OS seedling :-).

Secondary question, what size are these tree's available? Do I buy 3gl and grow out, or are larger  specimens available ?

3gal is swell, but my personal preference has always been 7gal. It's still within the realm of affordability, but tend tend to hit the ground running. And, unlike a larger sized tree (eg, a 25 gal), they haven't "adjusted" to life in a pot and still have strong vigor. The next best from a 7gal is a 3gal.

I thinks there's a misspelling on the Cac mango. Cat is the Vietnamese one: means "sand". At least it should be spelled Cat but pronounced, it sounds like Cac. So the "sand mango" not the "meowing mango" lol

Even more confusing, Coc (I'm assuming is Vietnamese) usually refers to dwarf/regular Ambarella. But it must taste better.

So you don't mind that they all ripen at the same time with only slight variation?
