Fruit prices, how do these compare to where you are?
« on: May 29, 2012, 12:11:26 AM »
I only got some cherimoyas, rambutans, and jackfruits.

Rambutan $3/lb: pretty good quality, sweet.
Mangosteen: $6/lb: also very good quality, no blemish on the outside or inside.
Lychees: $3/lb: not super sweet, but good. I'm not a big lychee fan, so I only sampled a few for free.
Jackfruit: $2/lb if bought whole. $6/lb if everything is separated already. Excellent quality, sweet, crunchy.
Cherimoya: $3.50/lb

Hard to compare as that fruit is Mexico fruit except for maybe the Cherimoya.  By the way, there is still some rag attached to the jackfruit perianths and it also appears the seeds are inside the perianths, correct ?

To elaborate further, fresh picked lychees of excellent quality: Mauritius $4.00/lb; Sweetheart $4.99/lb; Hak Ip $5.00/lb..  I have seen prices as high as $14.00/lb from lycheesonline...however all of these prices are for fresh picked local fruit.

Cherimoya - not available/grown here in Florida.
Jackfruit - local fruit not quite ready yet (about 2-4 weeks away)
Mexican grown fruit - while it is available ta local oriental markets I do not and would not purchase

Just curious, why? Is it political, or safety related?

Newgen,
That jackfruit looks pretty good. I've seen clean jackfruit here with the seeds taken out for about $9 a lb and it doesn't come in a nice clamshell container like yours did.

I thought that Fruitscapes was a new business started by Steve and Jessy that used to work at Treehouse nursery.  My undesrtanding is that Treehouse Nursery is still in business and is owned by Lianne, the daughter of the late Bob and Vivian Murray.
Lychee prices are way up this year.  Very little lychee fruit in southwest Florida.  I paid $ 7.99 a pound in Philadelphia's China Town, two weeks ago.

Behl,

Market is on the corner of Beach Blvd. and  McFadden ave. in Westminster. Its in the large strip mall, biggest store there, has a Vietnamese name. I was surprised by the prices myself, the lychees were very good taste, rambutan was good (but mild and less flavorful then the lychees).
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

yes, it must be the same place I got mine from, right off the 405 Freeway. They must now have lower prices. if they are selling for $1.49/lb, it must be even cheaper if you buy a box of 20 lb.

I will check them out

Jackfruits are sold $1/lb here in San Diego.  Haven't paid much attention to the others though.

When I have them, I have not been able to get more than $1 per pound for jakfruit from my local Jamaican and Indian clientele.  Sold once to a Chinese market and they took about 250 lbs from me for $.90/ pound. I don't know how people can get some of the prices that they do for whole fresh jakfruit.  I need a richer clientele I think.

Harry, you need to camp out in Beverly Hills to sell at decent prices. but then we will need to find asians to eat it first. Seriously, growing fruit and veggies myself, I cant imagine how cheap these things are sold by farmers for consumers to have a shot at it being affordable given what it takes to grow, transport, and sell. If it werent for Asian small and giant supermarkets, the US Supermarkets are out there to rape everyone! They sell at very high prices and I am sure they dont pay a dime to the farmers.  Imagine 1 tomato or 1 red onion at Albertsons or Ralphs here could cost you $1, this is sick.

I love jackfruit, but we cook it when its fresh green and not ripe. it makes a delicious veggie when combined with Tamrind! Some day I will post recipe! I can get green unripe jackfruit only at Indian grocery stores.

There are loads of fruit farms and small 'dude ranches' producing but not a big human population in NQ to consume produce not exported or sent south. Most of Australia has expensive fruit produce and the cost of living is higher than the US.
