What's this scaly thing?
« on: June 11, 2019, 01:21:22 PM »
I've seen some on the branches of trees, this specific one is on my ladder. Very hard to the touch, hard to scrape off, like it's glued on with Gorilla Glue, Lol.
Thanks,

Yes, it is a praying mantis egg sack. I used to collect them as a kid and then have thousands of baby ones crawling around.

I thought praying mantis egg sacs were more round and irregular like this below.  I've had a few and they don't look anything like trilobites.

So is that thing "active", and containing eggs, or have all the eggs hatched and gone and now it's just a empty housing?

My guess is an empty cockroach egg case (oothecae). I had a couple on the 2x4 posts of my greenhouse, and they are "glued" on pretty tightly.

I do not believe you can visibly tell if it's hatched unless you see babies running around. Daintree, that picture you posted is not a cockroach eggsac. They are much more cylindrical

Put it in a screened cage, like a good butterfly enclosure, and see what emerges. Lotsa fun with mystery eggs.
