Saw a few young tamarind trees in Malaga last March (on the university campus, so could be experimental). Only one bad fruit hanging from a twig

I really like the Chinese. Crunchy and slightly sour when half ripe, soft when ripe, tough when dried, nice and sweet. Most varieties of mauritiana i have tried taste of puke, not so nice

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Not enough Durian Discussion

Durian kampung as well as some wils species grow and sometimes fruit in Borne mountains over 1200 m. The climate there is pretty rough and temperatures  can stay around 11C for extended periods. Durians from there should do ok in subtropical areas like Macaronesia or maybe even Florida. Im thinking about the moist northern slopes of the Canary islands. Of course the PH needs to be lowered but this is being done for other crops there

Heidelberg, Germany, 8a, maybe even 8b in cvery sheltered microclimates. Trees have not frozen since 2013 when we  had -15C C for weeks. Trees un sheltered locations alo g the river fruit quite well every year, trees in the city usuakky have only a few fruits exept after especially mild winters. The time of flowering is crucial. Trees which flower during the last warm autumn days set fruits but most trees flower in mid winter and need a lot of luck to hit a warm period. -5C can easily kill the flowers. The young fruits seem to be much more cold tolerant than the flowers.

Hi,
travelling to southern Spain (mainly Seville, Malaga, Costa del Sol, Costa Tropical), maybe elsewhere in order to find rare fruits, fruit trees and fruit parks for my youtube chanel "all the fruit" with already over two thousand fruit videos.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrKEeyhQxkfeXy-HN1R8wCA

Where can i find exotic, subtropical or rare fruits? Where are good botanic gardens, private collections, government farms or good public parks? Any super rare fruits to look for? Are any members based in S Spain? I would love to meet them and see their orchards. Any help is apreciated

La Cosma is usually considered the best when it comes to subtropical fruits

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Loquats Fruiting in January - In SoCal

Im in the Canary islands right now. Loquat fruiting time here is in Feb/March. Last december i saw a couple ripe fruits as well as some little ones and many flowers on two trees on the northern coast of Gran Canaria:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBZPO4syh7Y

In January i saw a few single ripe fruits in several locations in Tenerife, then towards mid January lots of ripe and ripening fruits in one location in the North of Tenerife. Locals remarked that this is quite unusual and also that the trees usually fruit earlier on the south side of the island.

Oh no, why is this online twice? How can i delete my post?

It is possible but ponderosa lemon is described as hsving thick rind (a sign that it could be a lemon - citron hybrid). This fruit has incredibly thin rind.
Also, ponderosa lemon seems to be mostly an ornamental while this is a superior lemon in my oppinion.
Or are there ponderosa lemons with thin rind?

Hi,

found this huge (780g/1,72p) lemon in Gran Canaria. Very thin rind, sour but not too sour, salty, very juicy. All fruits look the same, seeds do not look like lemon seeds. Vendor says the only thing special about it is that it was grafted on "wild orange".
Most giant lemons i know are just rind and no juice. This one seems a very good lemon for lemonade or lots of juice. Is it a named variety or sth new?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Where to hunt for rare fruits in West Malaysia
« on: December 28, 2019, 11:00:41 AM »
Hi,
Found over 400 fruit species in Borneo a year ago, my most succesfull fruit trip so far:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbdhahikKZs&list=PL2AyaQ9frDUvlYqSgv6aILA2bI_CxPrxI
This time i am going to West Malaysia starting from new years eve. Where shall i look for fruits (wild durian species, durian cultivars, rare jungle fruits)? Where is the fruit season in January? And most important are they some fruits enthusiasts there who would like to meet and help me hunting down the rarest fruits?
Looking forward to any tips.

Ok, then i will maybe just stick to Malaysia.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Chirimoya Soursoup hybrid sold in Spain?
« on: December 12, 2019, 03:55:40 AM »
What is even more shocking is how fast agriculture is disappearing in the Canaries. They are even importing subtropical fruits grown in Europe.
In the 20th century they were mostly giving up dry, infertile land but in the last decades vast spaces of fertile, well watered land have been abandoned. They say they can make more money with less effort in other jobs. However, the price of the land is so ridiculously high that people who want to move to the islands for agriculture have no chance to buy a farm.

 ;D ;D ;D
I guess Canarian vendors come up with random names because they usually have no idea what they are selling.  I almost never get a proper answer when asking about mango or avocado varieties. Only the producers on the farmers markets tend to know more.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Chirimoya Soursoup hybrid sold in Spain?
« on: December 06, 2019, 06:07:32 AM »
Hi,

This was sold as "chiriguana" on the market of Santa Cruz/Tenerife. The vendor explained me that it is a chirimoya/guanabana hybrid. To me it tastes like a chirimoya with a hint of boiled corn. I suspect it is either a chirimoya with bumps/spines (not uncommon around here) or an atemoya. Please help with id and if someone wants seeds i saved some.

Hi

just compiled three playlists from short trips this year:

-Fruits of Cote Azur, Monaco and Italian Riviera: Mostly subtropical fruits grown at the same latitude as Southern Canada:

-Fruits of Naples/Amalfi: Mostly lemons, giant citrons and kumquat hybrids:

@Maryoto: Did they finish the new road from West to East Kalimantan? That would be a reason for me to go there.

21
Thank you for the offer, Maryoto. I am not sure if i will make it to Kalimantan this time since i plan to concentrate on West Malaysia, Sabah and the Brunei/Miri area (lots of Durian species i have never tried).

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Annonaceae that are temperate
« on: November 26, 2019, 06:18:34 AM »
Maybe it would be more practical to ask "Which tasty Annonaceae do you think could survive the climate of Snellville, Georgia and fruit there without protection and where can we get some good quality seeds?"
Btw i would like to ask the same question about Heidelberg, Germany. 8a, good for figs, kaki and suchlike, pretty atlantic climate, less sunshine than average 8a in the eastern US since much farther north.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best tropical berries to grow?

In the playlists about Borneo and Java fruit i posted many videos of berry like fruit. Some are hard to get but some, including tropical Rubus are available throughout the tropics. Most are rather tasty. Unfortunately, some are invasive, too. Hope you find sth you like.

Thank you, i plan to go there👍

In Malaysia they usually use "Borneo". In Indonesia they know this name but do not like it.
