Tropical Fruit Discussion / Still no flies or bees
« on: February 25, 2023, 11:25:02 AM »
Even though my yard is exploding in mango blooms, I haven't seen ANY. In past years, I could find my dog's poop within minutes with the swarm of flies covering it but today? none. I can now  leave my sliding patio door open when I go out for a minute and in the past I could not!  My GF is over 25 miles north of me and she has the same situation.

Are the cities spraying excessively for mosquito control? If not what's going on?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Trying guava... again!
« on: January 31, 2023, 10:35:36 PM »
I had a great papaya tree die of old age and in it's sunny spot I put a 5' tall Ruby Red guava. I've had bad luck with guava they always got inundated with scale and the fruits have had fruit fly.

This one is in a spot right near my back door so I can pay more attention to it and hopefully catch problems before they get out of hand. I have a good supply of mesh bags and horticultural oil to battle with.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cleantalk blocking searches?
« on: January 24, 2023, 09:15:58 AM »
I was able to use the search function this morning, and then poof this popup appeared and search is now disabled for me.  Does anyone know what's up with this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit trees I gave up on
« on: December 30, 2022, 01:16:15 PM »
This coming spring I plan on making room in my yard for as yet undetermined varieties.

Slated for the axe are:

Excalibur Mamey. After 12 years of die back and no fruit, this one goes for sure.
White Sapote. After three years of performance like the Mamey I pulled it.
Peaches. Even though I have gotten fruit and the two I have are healthy, the crops after 9 and 11 years have not been large enough to justify the space.
The soursop was completely cleaned of foliage by this last cold snap, it's been (putting it mildly) a shy bearer and as of now its only use was adding leaf litter and shade to the yard :-)

I may once again try guava. I've had great luck with large number of fruit, but had serious fruit fly issues. This time I'll try bagging the fruits much earlier.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pink pineapple experience
« on: December 27, 2022, 11:46:57 PM »
I found them at a local market and even at $8 I figured I'd give it a try. Boy, was it a letdown! Even though it was fully ripe both my GF and myself wouldn't even finish the whole fruit and it went into a tupperware with sugar water for a few days to tone down the acidic "flavor"

I read that Del Monte is snipping the tops off before shipping them to keep backyard growers from growing their own gene spliced samples, I have news for them, I do not WANT any! :-)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Canistel question
« on: December 13, 2022, 03:55:25 PM »
I have a Fairchild #2 and I always pick them ripe and I would like to send some to Connecticut. How ripe or what stage of  ripeness can I pick them to ship?

I figure to send them after the first of the year but since I never tried ripening them off the tree I do not know if they will ripen once picked? Right now they are fully colored but still hard as a rock.

The title says it all. A few years ago I bought a bare root chocolate (Diospyros nigra) and it was DOA. I tried to revive it but no dice.

So, I understand the Diospyros nigra is a USDA 7,8,9,10 and 11 and I'd like one, but only if withing driving range of south Florida. Does anyone know of someone who has them in stock?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / How to NOT advertise fruit
« on: December 06, 2022, 05:43:41 PM »
I L-O-V-E persimmons, I mean as much as any top tier fruit I've tried but the Cali persimmon industry does themselves no favor with the horribly incorrect and misleading package verbiage...

"Sweet Honey Flavor, Ready to eat NOW"

Imagine Chiquita putting THAT on their GREEN, hard, immature bananas?

No, these persimmon will not be ready for weeks until they get squishy like an over ripe tomato, after that? WOW!!!  :-)  Egads, the persimmons in the pic will be astringent and destroy any possibility of persimmon growers gaining a repeat buyer!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rollinia
« on: December 02, 2022, 02:34:12 AM »
I planted a Rollinia three years ago as a healthy tree bought in a recently re-potted 7 gallon.  It has thrived, and unlike some I've seen mine has a canopy that is dense, and dark green with a 4-5" thick trunk and is between 12 and 15 feet tall. It has bloomed since the first full year in ground and every year since going in the ground, and set a few fruits which turned black and fell off. I have a well and it gets sufficient water, and fertilized with Excalibur's stuff.

Is this fruit drop a matter of the tree still being immature and my expecting fruit sooner? Or, an I missing something in its care.

Citrus General Discussion / How long for a lemon graft to die?
« on: December 02, 2022, 02:11:41 AM »
My GF's granddaughter sent her a small lemon seedling which she wanted to see fruit sooner than the (unknown cultivar) seedling would. So, she went to Lowes and snipped off a Meyer cutting (bad girl) and asked me to graft it onto the seedling. I used a cleft and the tree and scion were perfectly matched in thickness. It's been two weeks and the cutting is still as green as when I grafted it and the tree stem has sprouted several new branches under the graft, and I have not uncovered the scion yet.

My Q's.

1. I've grafted Mango before and know when a graft took or not but since the scion is still bright green I do not know if it should wither and die if the graft did not take.

2. Should I clip the new branches that have erupted under the graft to send more resources to the grafted scion?

3. Assuming the graft took, when should I remove the wrap from the scion? After new growth sprouts?

  Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Your worst trees that give volunteer seedlings
« on: November 01, 2022, 01:24:47 PM »
A few trees became a nuisance with volunteers growing in huge amounts under them. I may  not have planted them if I had known this.

Fairchild #2 canistel... I miss a lot of drops and the seeds quickly establish themselves in the mulched understory. The fruit is worth keeping the tree as is my Julie seedling "Juicy Lucy" whose seeds erupt into seedlings easily in mulch.

I've pulled Coffee due to the hundreds of seedlings it produced, and my lemon drop mangosteen is on the list to go.

Any other noteworthy trees which need a lot of seedling removal work?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Off topic firestarter
« on: October 18, 2022, 05:13:13 PM »
Over the summer I store trimmed branches to use as kindling. Most fruit trees are not as good as pine wood scraps but this summer I pruned my lemon drop mangosteen heavily and the wood (even small branches) is outstanding kindling.  It burns fast, hot and unlike most fruit woods instead of going instantly to ash it turns into hot red coal like material which lasts a longer time than any other kindling I have used.

If you have  mangosteen and a fireplace or firepit keep your trimmings instead of chucking them out.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Terrible season
« on: May 15, 2022, 06:11:20 AM »
My Mango, lychee and annona are having their worst season ever while my sapodilla and canistel are and have been consistent producers.

Anyone else having similar issues? Suspected causes?

41
I have some Kampong Mauve sugar apple seeds, potted Sugar apple seedlings (4"-6" tall) as well as some in ground (you'll need a pots and soil to did them up) lemon drop mangosteen seedlings and Noble muscadine grape seeds also, and maybe a couple of Fairchild #2 seedlings.

Oh, scions of my several annona (Geffner, Kampong mauve, sugar apple, purple custard apple, San Pablo) are here for the taking too.

Again, free, in person, local pickup only in North Broward So. Flo. No shipping, don't ask :-)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kampong Mauve
« on: August 11, 2021, 01:26:26 PM »
Last year I got a couple of tiny fruits, but this is my first decent crop from my little tree... maybe a dozen fruits on it. I have to say, they're  not what some might call "top tier" but they are quite flavorful if not quite as sweet as a few other annonna  I have but juicier, no doubt both issues likely due to the copious amounts of rain recently.

I'm already looking forward to next year when the little five foot tree grows a bit more can support more fruit.

Anyone else with a Mauve that's in a similar taste envelope?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone have quenepa?
« on: May 24, 2021, 09:30:44 PM »
A friend who has been in Puerto Rico had some of my Sweetheart Lychees and she said quenepa is very similar. I've only seen pix and do not know anyone growing them.

44
This year my lemon drop has a bumper crop. Their flesh to seed ratio is poor, and eating them out of hand is not so rewarding, so I use them primarily to flavor water (one of my few beverages) using a garlic press to extract the juice.

Come and take as many as you like. PM me for info.

PS. The tree has scads of volunteers, also free for the taking.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New bees in my yard
« on: May 21, 2021, 12:54:31 PM »
I've been wanting bees to visit my yard for years, and since yesterday a hive started in an overturned pot on the ground next to my lychee. The pix of "good" bees don't appear to match, but the africanized pix I saw do.

I have inadvertently been within two feet of them while picking lychee and they seem to ignore me.

So, Q's.

1. Are these africanized bees?
2. If so can I use bee / wasp killer to remove them?
3. If not africanized should I just leave them alone? My dog runs around the yard and I'd be concerned that she might get interested in them and get attacked.

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Wild tomato help, zone10
« on: May 18, 2021, 12:44:27 AM »
I have never grown tomatoes in Florida, but one appeared a couple of months ago out of nowhere in my yard. I suspect a bird or other animal passed a seed in its scat.

This vine tomato is growing for a while now, it has grown like a weed and I have had to tie it up to limbs on the lychee it sits under to support its rather heavy weight.

So far 5 tomatoes have set, but I pulled the largest today (about 1.5" to 2" across) as it had a translucent spot about the size of a quarter on one side (it was not touching anything else) and the pulp had turned watery. Is this some indication of a problem with the vine, or is this normal fruit attrition?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Funny Juicy Lucy mango
« on: May 11, 2021, 04:07:55 PM »
Almost every year my Julie seedling gives me an odd fruit. First there was the nose, now it's a big behind!  I have to spend more time looking at the fruits on this tree :-) Anyone else have funny fruit pix?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango second crop
« on: May 03, 2021, 02:13:48 PM »
I've rarely had a second crop but I'm delighted when I do... it spreads the season out longer. This year (4/30) my Madame Francis started a second bloom when the first is only a couple of weeks from ripening. Anyone else getting a second mango bloom?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pugging a Mamey?
« on: April 09, 2021, 11:18:00 PM »
I have a 7' tall (4" caliper) Mamey in ground 10 years bought as a 7 gallon. It's one of the few trees I've had that languishes on but I still have had patience with it waiting for it to get on with it. The upper branches have always experienced a growth flush, and stem die back soon afterward, so it remains small.

Currently the upper branches are not sending out new growth and existing leaves are yellowing and withering.

OTOH, today I saw that it's pushing all sorts of new growth on the trunk at four to five feet from the soil while upper branches are all losing leaves and the upper stems are dying. Is it time to pull it, or pug it? Is "pugging" even possible to do without killing it? If I chop it off, should I first wait for the new growth to push out fully before decapitating it?

I have a bunch of 3"-5" Lemon drop mangosteen seedling / volunteers which I am going to  pull from beneath the parent tree soon. If anyone wants some or all bring a shovel, pots and soil and take all you want. Local North Broward Florida only, no shipping, sorry.
