Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My 'Sri Kembangan' carambola
« on: September 22, 2022, 10:57:00 AM »
I hear you sumognat :) My neighbor brings me bag loads of her carambolas. But I discovered when you juice them in a slow juicer, the juice is exceptional.
Regarding productivity, I do not really care either. I hope the tree will not get very big though.

I bought Sri Kembangan tree from Mike at Trees n More. Originally I wanted Kari but Mike let me taste the 2 and Sri was a winner. The tree was huge though.
How big are your Sri K trees?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: toxicity cherimoya seeds?
« on: May 19, 2022, 03:04:23 PM »
A dude told me once he blended up soursop flesh with the seeds in it and drank it and he was fine. I wouldn't do it intentionally but doesn't seem that dangerous. I'm assuming similar toxicity.
here in Mexico people do Guanábana juice by adding water and sugar in the blender then just strain it and add ice is delicious, the seeds don't brake easily, same thing when accidentally eating it, will go out in one piece, to be poison need to get a handful and Chew on them..
Yes, I remember that from Mexico. Looking at the "input" I was wondering, how is he going to get rid of the seeds???? They did not get ground lol.

Jupiter here also. I was expecting this year to have bloom on maha chanok. None yet. Most mangoes in my neighborhood are now forming fruit.

@Jack, that makes sense. I fertilized the tree. On the other hand, @Fiddler says that only Beaumont died. Other did not.

Up.
Do you know when does Guava Mango fruit? How early it is?
How big is the tree when mature?

I am in the constant pain of selecting the mango varieties that would take the last slots in my lot.
You mention Guava is early. How early? And how vigorous? I want to graft on my VP in the front yard and need rather a solid big tree.

The root is perfect, no issues. But the wood is super dry.
@Johnny Eat Fruit, there are already 2 Beaumont macadamia trees that followed the same symptoms and died. Fiddler might be correct about the disease. I hope it will not spread to California.

The new one is super cute. Love it. Congratulations to a talented mom!

Well, I am quite a layman, but fungus means sth visible to me. My Beaumont simply dried out. Leaves browned then dropped, dry branches.
I was suspecting nematodes and wanted to pull out the tree. With nematodes should go easily. I pulled hard and the trunk broke without even bending it. I catapulted and bruised my butt. I had to use a shovel to dig out the root. It looked perfect for me. No trace of any parasites, nothing. I will take a picture later.
Very silent death, I would say.

@Fiddler, what is the outcome? Did your macadamia survive?
My Beaumont did almost nothing (maybe 1 flush) for 3 years, then died. Originally was a 3-gallon nice sapling.
I wonder if I should even bother with buying a new one... Or go for another mango  ;D

Ha! That's the question! I do not know if they are cast iron or PCV. Houses from the 60s, but my sewers are plastic now, originally cast iron. I should ask the neighbor in case he knows...

13
Haha, this is what happens when you ask for a recommendation on tropicalfruitforum. I love this place.
I am not ruling out NDM4 completely at the moment, because according to tropicalacresfarms it is dwarfish and my kids like it as the only mango variety. They might not be kids anymore when the tree starts fruiting though... ;) Also, anything mold/fungus has not been a concern so far. I think I am lucky with the microclimate here.
But I think Rosigold will be a winner. Imam Prasand will probably take another spot on my lot though.

Thanks everyone for all advice!

Edit: I didn't notice I am responding to Alex lol. So, Alex, do you think NDM4 can be comparable size to Rosigold?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Newbie Here
« on: December 30, 2021, 10:29:39 PM »
Hello, they are all blooms. The last one is a type of blossom with vegetative growth. There is a special name for it. More experienced growers would tell you.
Generally, in the case of such young trees, you should rather trim the bloom. Anyway, wait for advice from more experienced growers.

15
Thank you sapote and Mike for your excellent tips.
I understand you have no objections regarding the proximity of neighbor's sewer line?

Re Rosigold: yes, I am aware it is quite mediocre, but very early.
Re Imam Pasand, I am very intrigued. From my preliminary research, I want it! My research says it's 10-15 feet tall, so ok with me. The only issue is the fruiting season June July. Mid-season and I am looking rather for early or late varieties.
Excalibur lists Imam Pasand. Mike, do you have it in your nursery? Shorter drive than Excalibur :)

I am running out of spots for my plants. There is however one spot where there is now a hideous areca palm half-eaten by fire ants.
As per the subject line, it is quite close to the neighbor's sewer line. + 2 more feet to his water pipe. I thought about a dwarf variety. NDM4 or Rosigold? Any other suggestions apart from these 2 and Pickering (already grows in a different spot)? Cocktail trees also welcome. I was discussing pina colada/sugarloaf in another thread but this might not be so small.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Orange Sherbet leaf color
« on: December 22, 2021, 09:19:53 PM »
Thank you all! Still, I think your pictures are greener.
I did fertilize the sapling. We'll see, maybe that is just this specimen.
Are your Orange Sherbets also so upright growing? I bought mine in 1gal container and at first, it sprouted one flush on the main stem. Then I cut the tip and it finally sprouted three branches but still very upright oriented. Now about 2feet high. Not that I am particularly worried about this fact, just being curious.

I am more preoccupied with my Pickering. Bought in Spring from Excalibur, it only had one flush so far. I planted it in the ground immediately after purchase. It is not even 1 foot tall I guess. I know from you that Pickerings are precocious and was already looking forward to picking fruits in 2 years. No chance now. Any of you had a similar experience?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Orange Sherbet leaf color
« on: December 21, 2021, 01:31:32 PM »
I have just planted my Orange Sherbet that I bought half a year ago from Tropical Acres.
I am wondering if it is normal for this variety to have so light green leaves.
The first picture is OS, the second Excalibur. The difference live is much more visible.
Do you think my OS is healthy? It had 3 flushes this summer. I fertilized it a little while still in a 3-gal pot.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: How do you fight papaya fruit fly?
« on: December 21, 2021, 12:50:59 PM »
Just reporting that I have harvested multiple fruits from my 5 papaya trees. Not even one infested since the one I reported last time. So organza bags are such a great solution. So convenient. I have eaten copious amounts of green papaya salad this season. As pineislander noticed, fruit flies do not attack now. The newly formed fruits do not have injuries.

I will be updating this thread from time to time as I planted some other varieties, such as sunrise, sunset, tainung waimanalo low bearing, red lady, improved maradol, red matador, Sun Gold, known you, bella, red queen. At first, I was labeling them but lost patience somewhere on the way lol.

Quite surprising for me: some papayas started fruiting 6 months after planing the seed.

So far so good. Out of 4 picked papayas, 1 was infected. At a very early stage though. I will keep reporting as the harvest progresses.
All the 3 clean ones were picked as big but at the "green papaya salad" stage. With really faint hues of salmon flesh.

You need to hurry though. I was there a few days ago and the fruit was super ripe, quite some fell on the ground.

22
What about the soil? Is it more acidic in Central Florida?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Free longans :)
« on: July 31, 2021, 10:58:09 PM »
I am not sure if any of you is aware of that. Those of you in West Palm Beach area, you might want to forage for longans. The trees are located on North Shore Drive, vis-a-vis Mangonia Park Tri Rail station. Almost the entire street is lined with them. At least two cultivars. You need telescope fruit picking scissors. The trees are big.
I picked about 8-10 lb.

24
My Valencia pride still holds 4 fruits, including one huge far from ripe.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sugarloaf vs. Piña Colada Mango
« on: July 30, 2021, 01:41:05 PM »
Lol, I will order more for sure. I am just at the stage of defining the optimal set. I am also approaching a decision to switch completely to mangos. I have so much failure with other fruit. With mangos in my area, the procedure is: plant, forget, come back in 3 years to pick fruit. Well, almost that and I hope I am not saying it at the wrong moment.
Currently, I have Valencia pride and Maha fruiting. Excalibur and Pickering too young to fruit. Orange Sherbet waits patiently in a pot until I cut down that hideous areca palm. If I really focus on mangoes I have space for 6 more trees, but this would be a big stretch.
