Title: Persea americana or schiedeana
Post by: All the fruit on November 12, 2019, 07:40:12 AM
Hi,
bought some long avocado from the Dominican republic in an ethnic Indian shop in Germany. The biggest fruit there were 1,2 kg or 2,64 pound. Not sure about the variety. Could it be Persea schiedeana? Or if not can anyone guess the variety?

Thank you.

looks like Russell avocado. That fruit has a lot of juice and may have been picked early. Some of these may have a loose seed when shaken which would indicate a more fully matured fruit.

Yes, that seems quite likely. Thank you.
So nobody thinks it could be schideana?

It's not schiedeana. It's some type of west Indies (Carribean) avocado.

I’ve never heard of schiedeana in commercial production, especially export scale.  Dominican Republic has a significant production of West Indian avocados. We see them show up here in CR sometimes.

I think we’ve had some reports on it before and Scheidanea seems to come from high parts of Mexico that are semi-arid.

Mine is fruiting just great in very rainy climate at only 650 ft. elevation. And i'm pretty sure it would fruit a lot lower than that also.

I could mail you seeds or scions if you wanted? They usually fruit in June-July.
There is an old thread about Persea schiedeana that i started here:

Could also send you scion wood to graft on to your root stock, as well as trying from seed. My tree fruited from seed planting in only 5 years. They grow very fast.
