Aloha!
Update: my tree turned out to not be mangaba.  I was so excited when the tree set fruit only to realize is was something else.  Another lost label misidentified one for me. 😂
Greetings Mike T ,  recently harvested our first Atherton oak nuts from you, and also the Durio macrantha flowered for the first time last season. Thanks again 🙏

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Durian season 2022 Australia!
« on: February 10, 2022, 10:54:56 AM »
Greetings “down under”, I’m writing this from “up above?” 😛
The season just ended on the northeast side of the Bigisland of Hawai’i. Twas a great season.
Here’s our seedling tree. Low pollination...means huge wads of durian to be stuffed in mouth.
We had a dry spell this winter...so The trees seem to be pushing flower buds again..hopefully it’ll be a durio summer feast
Aloha
Micah

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone growing Lacunaria jenmanni?
« on: July 27, 2021, 01:24:56 PM »
Aloha
Just wondering if anyone has this gem planted?  Or if anyone has tasted it?if so what’s your experience growing them. I’m looking for seed or plants.
A few years ago Vitor was offering this rare Amazon species.  Supposed to be a delicious fruit with commercial potential.
Male and female plants needed.
I’ve got two small seedlings from him still in pots waiting to be planted.
Best
Micah

I’ve got a couple trees of it.  Pulp ratio is very poor. Sour pulp.  Not worthy...unless I have a crappy type.
Also I have voa vanga v madagascarensis.   I love them they are sweet sour green apple fruit leather flavor and texture.
Best

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lean Season for backyard durian

How long did your seedling take to get flowers Micah as I know some people have to wait well over 10 years. I have less than 20 durians this season and last year the Penang88 alone had way more than that. I like to share mine so there won't be as many for sharing when they ripen in the next few weeks.

Yes the seedling tree that’s flowering now started fruiting at 12 or 13 yrs old. It’s 17 yrs old now.   We thinks it’s a monthong strain. Big lobes, small skinny seeds mostly.
I do have another seedling tree that’s over 16 now and no flowers yet...this one is on the bank of a small creek.  Maybe that has something to do with not flowering.  It’s very robust and healthy looking.
It is the best when there’s enough to fill the freezer and share a bunch with friends and the durian naysayers.  Next thing ya know, they are asking when it’ll be in season again haha.

Mmmmm durio. Fat ones up there 👆!  But yes not enough to satisfy the hunger for durian 😛.
Our seedling tree here just has set some fruits.  76 more days until the feast starts.

13
Thus has been on my wishlist for 15+ yrs
I just found that one sprouted in my nursery! Whoop whoop!
Now I need another.  Haha

14
Hi any news on peoples plantings of this?
I finally got one sprout going. Now I search for another
My two platonia insignis seedlings. I'm amazed how tough they are compared to other tropical trees.

No
One of the platonia insignis seedlings got eaten by a feral cat  :'(. Yes, our feral cats are vegetarian and they love young plant shoots. The good news, the seedling started to regrow again.

Aloha everyone
I’m slow to answer emails
This week I’ll be responding if I haven’t already
Thanks 🙏

Sweet and some tart.  Like a green apple jolly rancher flavor.  But more gummy in texture
.
How does the solanum pachyandrum taste?

17
I got them labeled as acuminata...but it may be fuzzy madrono...I’ve never seen fuzzy m before.  The flavor when perfectly ripe is a mild sweetness with a bit of sour.  It’s good , I prefer achachairu.  My son loves them.  The tree is so productive, even in the shade of a stinking toe tree.
Wow those G.acuminata look good and I can't tell them apart from fuzzy G.madruno.

18
Do you have pictures of the plant and fruit for the garcinia acuminata? Thanks
There she is

19
You are welcome Kevin. Thanks youuuuuu!

It was quite a durio extravaganza.  Awesome to do a trip with a bunch of peeps, that way we could sample so many types in a sitting without wasting or going broke.
Yes ,there was so much diversity in each species. Just when I thought red graveolens wasn’t that good ,we tried some that were savory ...more like avocado...and good

I think he meant durio dulcis when he said FUELY.   Alll one can do when describing a flavor is say “like” something else...but once u try dulcis...then it’s hard to forget.  It’s got a menthol like taste strong Vick’s menthol/paint thinner smell. Sweet and good, but very pungent powerful.   Too powerful of a smell to be kept in a hot van for too long...even for durio lovers.
Maybe some of graveolens had similar flavor/smell
Dulcis Pics

"Fuely" Does that mean rich, caloric?

Thank you, Micah for sharing your impressions.  What a great experience, sampling several unusual durio species straight from the source.
No, he didn't mean rich or caloric. I just asked him and his reply:
"Not quite solvent and not quite kerosene but just something Feuly"
I think he means a bit of a turpentine taste.

Aloha fruit friends and fiends! :)
Went on an amazing durio tour in Borneo with Lindsay Gasik aka durianwriter.  I highly recommend taking a trip with her.   We gots to try many types of species and with each there was lots of variation.
Durio Kinabaluensis was a small fruit with kinda scant pulp...sort of like Durio graveolens ....but the flavor was delicious.  I preferred them more than the different graveolens, kura kura, the small oxylanus, and dulcis. They were sweet, and exquisite.
Worthy to grow for sure, but one fruit won’t get one person full.  Nothing like the copious amount of flesh a Durio zib has.  Hard to beat zibithinus in flavor too.  Some of the lowianus was close second favorite, then large oxylanus, then Kinabalu for flavor.
Heres a couple pics of Kinabaluensis
