Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First sugar apples less than 12months old
« on: October 06, 2021, 09:01:15 PM »
It's a flower not a fruit yet.
Heres a picture of a small fruit forming last year. It was a 47-18
which is why it's red. Most of my sugar apples including red fruited types
start out green

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: garden hose filter
« on: October 03, 2021, 10:41:42 PM »
I had a deep well on my property and had the water tested.
It had very high salt content and some of my trees were suffering.
I was told the filters are not effective. I was able to
switch to a shallow well on my property. I don't have any
experience with the filters and went with what the water company
told me. If the filters work I would like to know.

I would wait until the new growth hardens and then plant.
It seems like the younger trees need daily watering when they are
flushing new growth and you want the tree focusing it's energy
on the new growth not new roots

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jackfruit Trees
« on: October 03, 2021, 07:53:37 PM »
I'm close to labelle also in 9b. I was advised to buy a seedling.
A seedling will fruit at 3-5 years old and if it freezes back it will come
back true. I have 3 different types of seedlings that are 2-3 years old and
a couple had male flowers this year. They all three took off this year and
I planted them on the South side of a large shed in cluster of other
trees including a soursop. One of my seedlings came from a fruit that
was grown in Lehigh acres which is a little cooler then me most nights.
Alan is from Tampa and has a fruiting jackfruit tree. Here's a recent post he made

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Peanut Butter Fruit
« on: October 03, 2021, 09:26:44 AM »
I don't know if I have a different type of peanut butter tree but my
fruit tastes like a spoonful of jiffy peanut butter. Nothing like dates.
It could be my taste buds? People I have given fruit to says it tastes
like peanut butter also

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First fruits on my Annona conica plant.
« on: October 03, 2021, 09:22:18 AM »
congrats!
Can you hand pollinate the other plant? Do they have typical
annona flowers that turn from female to male? I also would like
to know how the fruit tastes

Thanks Mike. The seeds arrived quickly and in good condition. There were even some bonus seeds thrown in.  :)

thanks and good luck

congrats on the fruit!
I always get Spring fruit. The trees flower throughout the
Summer but don't set much fruit. It does have a unique taste!

I would still think the tree will go through a dormant phase and
defoliate and then put out new growth and flowers?
I have noticed the annonas need very little fertilizer.
Is that new growth or old leaves?

In Florida around now when the days get short enough the sugar apples
go dormant. In the Spring they push new leaves and start flowering.
Usually it is still very warm when they go dormant but the length of day light
triggers the pause. I don't worry about the leaves now. Are your daylight hours
decreasing?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Should I prune it?
« on: October 02, 2021, 09:27:34 AM »
Citrus trees respond well to pruning. Also the fruit forms on new growth.
In the groves after harvest the farmers take the sides and tops off every tree
with their mower blades and the trees flush new growth for next years fruit

I have a couple trees doing ok a little South of you. I'm in 9b close
to 10a. If you get in the low 30s or high 20s I would expect some leaf
burn. I like to let the fruit dissolve on my tongue. It reminds me of a
spoonful of peanut butter. It's amazing the red fruit is creamy not juicy.
I did plant my trees on the South side of a cluster of trees for a little buffer

How long do you want to extend the season?
I have seen later sugar apples turn grey and not ripen when
the temps are cooler but last year I had some Na Dais that
ripened in January. I didn't do anything special and don't
hand pollinate my sugar apples. The flavor was washed out
but I was happy to have them in January. The tree had it's
usual fruit around August. My custard apple's fruit ripened in March
and the cherilata is suppose to ripen from January to March
It may be easier to add other annonas for an extended season?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Growing Sapodilla and Jabotica in Containers
« on: September 22, 2021, 07:28:26 AM »
Makok is my favorite sapodilla and doesn't get as large as Silas Wood.
The SW has more fruit. I agree and would start with small pots and up pot
later. I use this mix for my jaboticabas

I have a Diamond R that carries this near me.

congrats on the fruit.
I wouldn't thin either. Mine go all Winter unless it really gets cold and then
it may pause.
