Can passion fruit grow in container
« on: April 15, 2020, 04:52:57 PM »
Someone gave me a passion fruit tree.  First time try to grow it.

I am planning to put it in a 15 gal.  Can I grow it in a container?
Do I nature trim every year?

Yes, you could grow it in a container and still get fruit. But in my experience they give a lot more fruits i grow them in the ground. Like triple amount of what they bear when they were in the container.

They will grow and fruit in a pot.  15 gallon is plenty.

Yes, indeed.   Regular passionfruit (Passiflora edulis) fruited for me repeatedly in 5 gal container, but looked rather miserable.   It's much more happy now that it's in the ground.  15 gal container should work just fine.   Enjoy!    Also:  don't overfeed.   If you overfeed you'll get great growth but no fruit (I'm speaking from firsthand experience here).   Kindest wishes!

I had one in one of those half 55 gallon drums  so like 20 gallons and I got 25 to 35 fruit from it.

Maybe think of the five gallon pot as temporary... for a year maybe.
They really do thrive in the ground ... because they grow into a monster.
You can always take cuttings and start the cycle over again too.

In ground the base of stem can get s thick as your arm and produce many hundreds of fruit. Why plant in a pot?

One possibility is... that you are living on the 2nd floor of an apartment building... but you still love to grow plants.
Containers might be your only practical option.
I know I did at one time.
As I recall... My only south facing window was covered up in passion flower vines.

Here's a pix I took this morning of a "Red Rover" growing in a 5 gallon pot in my greenhouse.
I've been hand pollinating the blooms:

You’ll need some type of large trellis stuck in the pot or behind it, if you want fruit. Passion love to climb and spread out.

That's true... mine are climbing on bamboo poles.

Mines pretty simple... short term solution for the summer.... 4ft bamboo pole stuck in the pot.
I weave the vines around onto themselves.
I'll have to come up with another solution eventually.
You could use 3 poles and creat a sort of mini tee pee style trellis.

I had Ruby Glows growing in pots in my old greenhouse... and they took root in the ground and now they live in the ground in the greenhouse year-round.

totally agree, based on my experience with P. incarnata, that they do not thrive in pots.

I would love to grow P. edulis but I don't have a greenhouse. If they were as precocious as P. incarnata, i could just grow them as annuals. But i hear they take more than one season to start fruiting...

Lol. I plant most of my passion vines surrounding thickets of clumping bamboo on my property, or trellising up cypress and willow trees. many ways to do it. Twine would work too. Same concept with grapes..

Also I read that most ripe passions will just fall off their vines, so really no need to worry if your vines become way out of reach.

I bought some "Red Rover" (P. edulis) from Brad Spaugh last year and they rooted very easily.
Great seller by the way!
Over wintered them in a couple of 5 gallon pots and now they are blooming as pictured above.
They could have easily have been over wintered in your home with south facing windows.
After a year though... look out... they really take over!
