Hi,
travelling to southern Spain (mainly Seville, Malaga, Costa del Sol, Costa Tropical), maybe elsewhere in order to find rare fruits, fruit trees and fruit parks for my youtube chanel "all the fruit" with already over two thousand fruit videos.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrKEeyhQxkfeXy-HN1R8wCA

Where can i find exotic, subtropical or rare fruits? Where are good botanic gardens, private collections, government farms or good public parks? Any super rare fruits to look for? Are any members based in S Spain? I would love to meet them and see their orchards. Any help is apreciated

Hi,

found this huge (780g/1,72p) lemon in Gran Canaria. Very thin rind, sour but not too sour, salty, very juicy. All fruits look the same, seeds do not look like lemon seeds. Vendor says the only thing special about it is that it was grafted on "wild orange".
Most giant lemons i know are just rind and no juice. This one seems a very good lemon for lemonade or lots of juice. Is it a named variety or sth new?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Where to hunt for rare fruits in West Malaysia
« on: December 28, 2019, 11:00:41 AM »
Hi,
Found over 400 fruit species in Borneo a year ago, my most succesfull fruit trip so far:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbdhahikKZs&list=PL2AyaQ9frDUvlYqSgv6aILA2bI_CxPrxI
This time i am going to West Malaysia starting from new years eve. Where shall i look for fruits (wild durian species, durian cultivars, rare jungle fruits)? Where is the fruit season in January? And most important are they some fruits enthusiasts there who would like to meet and help me hunting down the rarest fruits?
Looking forward to any tips.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Chirimoya Soursoup hybrid sold in Spain?
« on: December 06, 2019, 06:07:32 AM »
Hi,

This was sold as "chiriguana" on the market of Santa Cruz/Tenerife. The vendor explained me that it is a chirimoya/guanabana hybrid. To me it tastes like a chirimoya with a hint of boiled corn. I suspect it is either a chirimoya with bumps/spines (not uncommon around here) or an atemoya. Please help with id and if someone wants seeds i saved some.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Feral columnar plum trees
« on: November 14, 2019, 06:50:51 AM »
Hi,
I found a group of plum trees from suckers in Heidelberg/Germany and assumed that they are damson plum (Prunus domestica ssp insititia) They all had a very slender growth form (usually more than 10x as tall than wide). since they were growing close together i attributed that to competition. Since then i have seen them several times growing from suckers from rootstock and they were always incredibly slender even when growing with enough space between them. Here is the original video:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sP6kUjpO4BM

Since the fruits are pretty good and the plants are obviously very vigorous i wonder what the variety (always used for rootstock) is and if it would be worth promoting it for small gardens

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Persea americana or schiedeana
« on: November 12, 2019, 07:40:12 AM »
Hi,
bought some long avocado from the Dominican republic in an ethnic Indian shop in Germany. The biggest fruit there were 1,2 kg or 2,64 pound. Not sure about the variety. Could it be Persea schiedeana? Or if not can anyone guess the variety?

Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rare fruit locations Tenerife
« on: September 18, 2019, 06:25:48 AM »
Hi,
Im going fruit hunting on Tenerife in Nov.  Can you tell me the best botanic gardens, parks, farms, nurseries? And are there any TFF members there willing to meet and share some experience? Also, i have been travelling in mountain areas of Borneo and SE-Asia and i am looking for someone ( preferably on the north coast or Anaga/Teno) willing to try growing fruit like mountain durian, Artocarpus, garcinia, rambutan in Tenerife.

I have already been to the Botanico, the Higuela, Sitio Litre, Jardin Aquatico, Garcia Sanabria and the Palmetum and know about Hamilton Gardens, Tigaiga gardens,Victoria gardens, la Constitution and la Granha. Im even more interested in tropical fruit farms and nurseries and most of all in fruit addicts like me.
Thank you in advance☺️

Hi,
a couple years ago i stumbled by accident upon the small village of St Martin in Germany. Their priest had the daring idea to plant all the plants mentioned in the Bible around the church. In Germany!
They were more successful than i would ever dream managing to grow olives, pistaccio trees, carob snd many more without any protection exept the mild microclimate. Check that out:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Reliable loquat for zone 8
« on: July 01, 2019, 06:02:18 AM »
Hi,
found the perfect Loquat for temperate climate. Seems to belong to the Japanese type of varieties with whitish soft tasty flesh. Was brought from Brazil as a fruit and has been growing and fruiting regularly in Heidelberg/Germany (USDA zone 8a, now rather 8b) for almost 10 years

« on: May 21, 2019, 09:09:25 PM »
Hi,
due to the mild winter now we have a lot of out of season fruit here in zone 7-8 in Germany. But what blew my mind were the ( not very good) ripe figs on two trees in mid May.

Here the fig season does not start before August in normal years.

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Thai eggplant id
« on: May 08, 2019, 07:21:00 AM »
Hi,
here some confusing eggplants from Thailand.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adfzAIyta5E

My questions (internet just cunfused me more):

- The pea eggplant (Solanum torvum?) is very different from the one eaten in Java. Are they two separate species?

-The green eggplant (S. virginianum?) Is smaller than the S. virginianum i know, tastes differently and has no green stripes. Could it be a hybrid with pea eggplant?

-Could the purple eggplant be a hybrid between udumalped eggplant and pea or thai eggplant?

All the other eggplants i mentioned are here (if i id them right):

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please id this sour Borneo eggplant
« on: April 30, 2019, 06:50:28 AM »
Hi,
I used to think that the sour Borneo eggplant is Solanum ferox and made a few videos abou it:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5RmAastdIwM&list=PL2AyaQ9frDUudYOxs_TpXo5hgkbeWLc3V&index=4&t=0s

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CTQfY1bfDdo&list=PL2AyaQ9frDUudYOxs_TpXo5hgkbeWLc3V&index=2

Recently somebody questioned that and i think they might have a point:

S. ferox seems to be a small hairy fruit used as a medicine in wide parts of Asia.

The people of Borneo insist that their sour eggplant is exclusively found on the island, it is larger, with a smooth shiny surface, a pleasent sour taste, a tough thin skin and is used as a common vegetable in Borneo/Kalimantan.

A great plant which should be cultivated throughout the tropics because its taste is nothing like the other Solanum species i know.

Has anyone eaten the small hairy S. ferox from Asia or the sour Borneo eggplant and do you have any info if they are the same or not?
