What is your absolute favorite guava variety?
« on: November 30, 2018, 04:04:02 PM »
I'm tryin to decide what guava tree I would like to plant.

I personally like sweet, creamy types of guava. I'm not much of a fan of crunchy or crispy types.

Brads got a variety that’s super good and super fragrant when ripe, it is very creamy and sweet and the whole seed ball separates easily. It might be Mexican Cream, maybe Brad can confirm.

I personally like the green crunchy types and the best one I’ve had was a Seedless variety.

I have one of the white mexican guavas.  Not sure if it was a mexican cream.  It was just something I picked up at walter andersens.

My neighbor has a small guava grove with some good ones also.  She has pinks and whites.  I can try and see what types they are.  Beumont pink I thibk was one of them.

To be honest, guavas just arent that great.  So Im not sure you will ever find "the one".  I bought a couple trees off JF but havent picked them up yet.  According to him jalisco red and another one are the top picks out of a couple dozen he has tried.  So we will see how those are.  I tried grafting his guavas this fall and 0 of 8 grafts took.  Maybe spring is a better time.  Anyway you may want to ask Frank for a tree.  He has a lot of people wanting them.

I'm not a big fan of guavas either but I like the cas guava (Psidium friedrichsthalianum). I've only had them a couple of times but It's a sour fruit (which I love) with a nice tropical flavor. Bit of a grainy texture. I'm growing a few from seed but I like them enough I'm thinking of buying a tree to put in my yard to skip some of the wait.

Personally growing 20+ cultivars at the grove, and they all vary drastically. Some are highly acid and others are not, some have thicker skins and slight color differences. They come in all shapes. Taxonomy is very tough on guavas.

‘Bogor’ Indonesian is claimed to be highly fruit fly resistant by some experts.

There’s a few white common guavas that are excellent, not the Thai white.

Commercially known as cv. ‘Homestead’ which is a hand polinated cross by George Ruehle of ‘Ruby’ x ‘Supreme’ is another common one.

There’s a lot of variants that are ok, mainly from seedlings, and most importantly taxonomy on guava is quite tough. You may not know what you have or are being sold. So, the best way to get something good is via vegetative propagation of a tree you know is great, for your preference of taste.

I think mixing various cultivars for jams, smoothies, cooking purposes etc. produces a much more rounded out guava flavor that is delicious and highly nutritious, much more than other fruits. Potassium, Lycopene in the skin, more Vitamin C than oranges. By mixing cultivars you create a flavor you can’t acheive with 1 tree. Consider it like blending various mango cultivars for culinary purposes.

Heres the picture of my good guava.  I have already removed one tree and have another "white tropical guava" thats getting removed.  This one is the only keeper.  Fruit isnt as large as the tropical guava but flavor and texture are superior.  You can open them and the seed cavity is easily removed.

Currently Growing White Thai, Tropical white, Tropical pink, African Gold, Mexican Cream, Excalibur Pink, Kilo white and Ruby supreme.  I have tried them all except the African Gold. Kilo and Mexican cream are my favorite white varieties(soft and creamy). However I must say I find the Ruby Supreme to be the sweetest and would always recommend it first.

Has anyone tried Taiwanese Pearl guava? I picked up the last guava tree Champa Nursery had during their Black Friday sale without knowing much about it.
