My Grimal (m spirito-santensis) Looks Diseased...
« on: February 07, 2013, 07:30:04 PM »
What the hell are these nasty looking things all over my Grimal (m.spirito santensis)? I mean they're ALL over my 12' tall jaboticaba...on the larger branches, smaller branches and all over the trunk...even near the ground. I'm really upset about this. I'm thinking my tree might be dying. What does everybody think I should do? I know I'll end up rubbing all of those ugly wart thingamajigs off. And if that doesn't work I'll probably yank it out of the ground because I don't want my other trees infected by these ugly looking nodes. Yuk...

Ray,

there's nothing like a fire fueled by jaboticaba charcoal.

Make room for soy beans and cattle in your yard!

Jaboticaba wood is easy to break, (like balsa wood) so you can probably just snap the trunk into pieces with your bare hands.  They also grow so fast, there's no need to worry about growing a new one.  You'll have a 10ft tall from seed in 2yrs, much like strawberry tree.

make sure to share pics of the tree being broken into bits, and the eventual glorious fire you'll make with its wood.

 :) :) :)

Oh man...!! I knew it!! I'm bummed now for sure! Thanks for having my back Adam. I knew I could count on you for giving me the best up to date and no B.S. info on this ugly problem... It's really gross looking. Actually looks like the tree is being taken over from a disease from uranus or some other stinkin' dark alien place. Looks like the thing's growing nipples for cryin' out loud.

I'll give the tree until Sunday and then I'll decide for sure what to do. In the mean time I'll clean up my chiminea and get ready for a weenie roast.

That's good to know about the quick growth rate on the Grimal. I figure from seed I can have one fruiting in about 2 years with the right amount of alkaline water, deep shade and chalky, limey alkaline soil.

You're the best Adam...

Ray,
It looks like a rare form of warts that almost decimated several myrciarias in Brasil. Where did you get this infected tree?  The infection is  caused by a bacteria called Janthinobacterium lividum jabuticabensis.  This stuff is always lethal to jabuticabeiras.  I strongly recommend that you cut this tree before it infects the other jabuticabeiras.. ;D ;D  By the way,  my spiritosantensis/grimal is showing the same problem after you came to visit... ;D ;D

Adam,
The text about jabuticaba branca implies that the tree was cut, so the wood would be used to make charcoal. Terrible!

Berto

It looks like I could be a host to that jabo disease and the jumping off point for it is whenever I'm around healthy myrciaria's. Sorry about me infecting your santensis. But like Adam said you can grow a fruiting Grimal in no time flat. These trees should be as popular as apples but then again they're about as disease prone as the common pome.

I guess this nipple disease is only manifesting itself in the Ft. Myers area. I haven't heard from any of the other members having this problem.

You should report this disease epidemic to USDA. I am sure they will come over and rip out your trees and incinerate them free of charge. Maybe they could then sell the charcoal to Brazil?

Brazil..? We'll just keep that charcoal here. We have enough cool nights in Ft. Myers.

And I'll have have plenty to share because I have a feeling I'll by ripping out all 10 of my jabuticaba trees.

You mean I've been advising people to do the wrong thing?

as soon as the trees get to a certain age, they always end up getting bumps all over the trunk...

I knew this was unhealthy, so I've torn out lots of large trees as soon as this occurs after about 10 yrs in some cases.

This disease characterized by small bumps forming on the bark, will soon spread to other jaboticaba trees nearby.

So I've been having all of my friends yank out their trees, and of course the wood makes excellent charcoal...so we've been making lots of room for cattle, and soy beans.

I don't think I'm giving bad advice...I hope you don't either.

Hi Oscar and Adam,
I actually thought them trees were going to get nuked...lol  ;D I even research Janthinobacterium lividum jabuticabensis from Berto's post ;D ;D ;D It's an anti-fungal for amphibians, which prevents infection by the devastating chytrid fungus :o Nice one, Berto ;D

how's that infected Grimal coming along?  I see your red might have caught it too.

The worst is when the tree starts putting energy into these galls that form on the cambium...Maybe they're all wasp eggs (or sawfly larva) in your cambium?
