To make max size with all most any fruit you need to thin.

That tasteless one found in Chinese markets. They're like small pears. I don't know if there's a variety.

Nothing has all the desirable traits is why we have so many varieties. I settle for decent sized ones with good taste, or even small ones with great taste.

But let's start with Big Jim as the old gold standard. I hear Avri is a little smaller than that. Peluche is bigger but doesn't taste very good at least the first time it fruited for me last year.

What's bigger than Big Jim and tastes good?

I bought a McBeth loquat but am waiting on fruit to ripen.

Does anyone have experience with this variety? Does the fruit taste any good?

I can also settle for smaller but tastier fruits. Interested in hearing more about good loquats.

In Japan I tried Mizuho which is called "The Queen of Loquats".

It's bigger than an apricot, roughly 3-4" in diameter when thinned to the standard one per branch.

It's a yellow type, in between the white and orange, strongly leaning toward white.

It's very sweet, but I feel that there must be loquats out there with unique flavors, and this one has a fairly standard profile with high sweetness.

It has a rather large seed cavity with anywhere from 8-11 seeds.

If size is the end-all, be-all, then many varieties would fit the bill, when strict thinning is applied.

Most people who have tried 'Chinadoll' have a strong preference for it.

How does Big Jim taste in California? My friend has a mature tree that we may end up topworking due to mild flavor. We even thinned the crop. I have to follow up on the story but I am starting to wonder if this is a seedling of Big Jim that someone in Florida decided to graft and keep the same name. The quality just isn't there for the past two years.

Check out Our Kids nursery in winter garden. I picked up a double graft aiden tori loquat from them a few weeks back. They are supposedly known for their special cultivars and he had a fruiting tree in his backyard he let me try(not sure what type it was). You can find some reviews about aiden on the forums here and the consensus I found was that they are large and great tasting.

Best of luck.

You can see pictures of my Big Jim fruits that are larger than chicken eggs in this thread.

Big Jim is the best tasting of the giant Loquats that I have personally tasted. They can pretty easily get to around 3 Oz with thinning. The early Big Jim’s can be bland, especially in rainy years but the late Big Jim’s are fantastic with excellent sugar content and just enough acidity to make the fruit interesting.

Leo Manuel’s Seedling Loquat from seeds via Maurice Kong also grow to huge proportions. Leo’s seedling fruit gets to chicken egg size without thinning but the fruit in the pictures were the first year the tree fruited and it only had a few clusters of fruit so in essence it was sorta self thinned although Leo did not cut any blooms off.

It is unfair to judge the fruit quality based off of fruit from a young tree but the fruit was bland from my recollection. Leo does not consistently fertilize to size up fruit or to improve Brix so there may be a lot of room for improvement. Here is s thread with some pictures of Leo’s seedling Loquat.
