Any one on here have chickens to feed?  ..

Ever Heard of those Insects that eat Dead Animals that you can Buy?
You can buy them, and they will eat It in a few days , and be chicken food,
and replenish your supply of flesh eating insects for High protein Chicken feed.

I do not know the Name right now, Does anyone?
but learned it before Steve's spence's web site
(green Trust) was Lost online..

I still remember The time Lapse video
they covered roadkill or whatever very quickly .

Do you guys leave out the Animals for Vultures
I'm sure you you placed them in a area ,
over time  they'd come back to check,
but then again Coyotee may also.

It is too bad all those houses went up, and the Animals raid all your trees
Anyway like mentioned to have some sacrificial type tree that grows supper fast
like A HEDGROVE of some sort maybe Mulberry or some thing while you kill the ones by your fruit trees
Not so much with Golfers , but someone on a forum does that for Birds to keep away from his other berries.
Maybe something Native that the golfers co evolved with
Willow or would some of these become to aggressive (pea family tree's)?
As a native Hedgerow.

Would something like Ghost pepper or even Cayanne placed in water, for plants do anything?
Whats this Golfer plant  the gopher spurge (Euphorbia rigida) Thanks (Sea walnut)  anyways
Does it make chemicals they do not like. ---

I wonder if Marygold or pepper mint growing would do anything
just guessing here, but I know insects do not like Marygold,

You say you make a Cage , and some are dipped in Zinc, but rust.
What if you wrap Chicken wire around that with gravel .
I know they dig, but held in snug with a few layers
I wonder if that may deter them to move to another tree.

I saw those nice furs on those
I do not think Rice roni cuts it
Better get completely Organic
if you want to make a impression.

On my grandfather's farm in Missouri we had a chicken house. My big brother put a flex hose on the muffler of his truck stuck it in a rat hole.He gave me a pistol with rat shot and after  15 minutes nothing was happening then all of a sudden the gates of Hell broke loose rats started coming out and tried to run up my pants leg almost shot myself. :o

Update I guess this won't work I just read that Gophers will block their tunnel to avoid being gassed apparently little bastards are smart.

Poison peanuts are not just for gophers they can be used on mole. I don't think they weather well or I would try them on squirrel. They say they dissolve like dog food. I don't think they're actually even peanuts most certainly not to be roasted or smoked

everything about this Product is great  other then the Misleading Song reference (el condor Pasa)
My family actually think I am funny drunk sometimes.

Good marketing though By the Simon, and Garfunkel team
I always thought Peru wanted to Use their original song that they wrote.

When the Nursery wraps the tree like that in that metal
I am surprised the tree roots do not girdle
I mean wouldn't the moles (and voles )
just burrow under the tree where the roots grow down
Still be interested in seeing if a pepper water would prevent them.

Gofers have a Aversion to Rhubarb

Want me to send some leaves next season.

Oxalic acid I suppose Kale water Might be Okay to make.

I made a insect spay as a experiement before with the leaves (that I never did use)
you do not bring to a full boil, but just under if you plant to experiment .

A site mind your dirt said to put down corn meal to last for a month it was from California too.
What does Gofer taste like kind a sad seeing that meat wasted,
but as long as a vulture gets it or something at least there's that..

I am guessing anything very bitter tannic might work as well
I know they eat tree roots ,
but maybe a tree leaf tea or something .

I said Rhubarb leaves , but star fruit has oxalic acid as well.

Home depot says use castor oil
I know waters  expensive in CA,
but just using around a young tree may be okay every few weeks

They also said Marigold like I said, and the gravel
But I said wrap the tree (which may have caused girdling

They said different , but wouldn't the gofer just go under it?

https://www.homedepot.com/c/ab/how-to-get-rid-of-moles-and-gophers/9ba683603be9fa5395fab901fca3cad4

Still wondering where that poison dart curare nicotine receptor post came from last night I deleted
only have the ever clear to make extracts (herbal/food flavoring)
will stay away from it, and get some rest.

Thought this will be an appropriate thread to ask my gopher control related question - Along with gopher trapping tasks, I plan to add an extra level of control by using the gopher basket for the trees planted. Until now I have used the 15 gallon hex mesh baskets for the avocado and mango trees.

While looking for economical alternatives, came across the knitted stainless steel mesh marketed as Speed basket. Has anyone used these stainless steel mesh baskets for large rooted / non fibrous trees like avocados? Will the roots be constricted by these fine mesh stainless steel baskets?

Thanks for your feedback on the effectiveness of the Speed Basket compared to the hex mesh gopher baskets. Appreciate any field experience on using either of these gopher control baskets. TIA.

Even the heavy hardware cloth baskets I painstakingly weave by hand don't last more than a few years. I wouldn't bother with anything less, as thinner materials dissolve quickly.

Thanks Oolie. Yes I can relate to the painstaking effort involved in hand weaving these baskets, not to mention the time spent. When you mention hardware cloth is it similar to these 1/4" fabric?

I am running through the last batch of these baskets, and need to figure a cost effective option for the next set of new trees.

if you have any specific vendor to get the hardware cloth or baskets locally will also be helpful. Cheers.

It might be worth looking at the manufacturer's website. The prices seem to be less than the retail prices I have seen, and the $12 shipping seems to be for any size order. I opted for local pickup in Santa Cruz, CA, and the site maps local dealers.

You can order big rolls of 1/2" size hole chicken wire.  Also sold as avery netting or something similar.  3ft wide x 100ft.  That will make quite a few nets for cheap.

Do you have a lot of traps?  I would assume you need about 4 traps per acre just to be able to maintain a very low gopher count.  If your place is over run younmay need 200+ traps.

Ive got a bunch of macabee traps if you want to buy them cheap, they are just taking up space.  Ive switched to gophenators and keep 12 of them for 3 acres and have zero gophers.

Are you working on trapping?  I think thats a more worthwhile effort than baskets personally.  You need to rid the property of them and keep it that way then you dont need baskets.  I realize its not a small task on so much acerage.

I have been using 1" chicken wire for gopher baskets.  I was going to use 1/2" hardware cloth but Tom del Hotal warned that it would girdle the roots.  There are some 15-20 year old gopher baskets in my yard and they haven't broken down enough for me to pull off the top edge yet.

Brad I will buy those macabee traps off you if SF doesn't want em.  Between the canyon and my neighbors ignoring their gophers I will never be rid of them.

Do you guys leave out the Animals for Vultures
I'm sure you you placed them in a area ,
over time  they'd come back to check,
That is exactly what I do, send them up the food chain by placing in an open field across the road. Mainly armadillos, the Turkey buzzards show up within a few hours and clean up in about one hour.

I use the 0.5" cloth and haven't run into root girdling yet, but I've had them break down enough to where gophers can find their way in. Any kind of chicken wire has lasted maximum 2 years before I found evidence of gophers coming through them.

I have yet to find an economical source of hardware cloth.

If I leave out any kind of dead animal, the squirrels will be on it instantly, and they don't need any more food.

I have yet to find an economical source of hardware cloth.

I had stainless steel hardware cloth in my Amazon shopping cart (Save for later), and was surprised to see it on sale on Prime Day at 20% off.  I also was watching galvanized hardware cloth and it also went on sale. I know, too late now, but it may happen again during special sale events.
