Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Coconut Dwarf Variety

Thanks will pick it from ebay in that case. Finding some for ~$30 so could spend that and do the experiment if they can survive. But will wait till spring, given smaller plant will hurt in winter if i buy them now. And have to baby sit them by moving to garage during winter.

online looks expensive  (i.e. $70 for a box, double the price of store one). We get kesar for $35-40/box (~10 mangos / box) in indian store till the supply last (2-3 months).

We had an issue with cherry fruit fly last year and many of the ripening cherries having larvae in it. Wondering how others solve cherry fruit fly issue? Planning to apply some peatiside this year as it's flowering now, not sure if that's good way of doing it or there are better ways.

Seems too early for kesar, Alphonso and begampally, which we normally find I our local Indian store. Where do you guys buy your Indian mangos from? I am interested to try coconut cream as saw lot of good things and seems better than kesar.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Home made compost for fruit trees
« on: March 22, 2018, 04:38:07 PM »
Just for reference, i have a strawberry guava (6-7ft tall), couple of years old (not sure how many as previous owner has planted it). First year after we move, i haven't put any fertilizer or anything. Just water, and it gave small guava but a decent harvest. Next year, out of my knowledge, i try to make not till compost below the tree with Leaves and Grass clippings (no water for compost). Didn't do much and no fertilizer. Next year, it got loaded with guava and also bit bigger than before. The tree was so much loaded that we have to put support below the branches so it won't break with the riped guava. We weren't able to eat all and shared it with friends.

But that was all leaves and grass clippings. So started thinking that i can do that way for my other trees. But wondering if others have also tried that and if they have some best practices that i can follow.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Home made compost for fruit trees
« on: March 22, 2018, 03:48:21 PM »
Wondering, if ppl use home made compost around fruit trees? If yes, how do your apply it? And also when do your apply it?
Also if you apply compost, do you still apply fertilizer (organic/inorganic) or that's not needed?

Asking this, as i started making my home made compost from leaves, grass clippings, coffee grounds, kitchen scrap (including egg shells). One batch is almost ready and second seems to be ready soon. I am planning to use it in fruit trees along with my vegetable garden, but wondering do my trees need fertilizer after that or compost is good enough.

Can ppl share their thoughts and experience with compost?

You don't really need to download to listen to it. It can play directly to your browser if you play it. The second podcast Smarty plants is also really interesting. I think both the research was done by the same scientist (Jennifer Frazer). who has a blog on scientificamerican: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/artful-amoeba/smarty-plants-my-latest-guest-spot-for-radiolab

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Root cuttings outside or indoor?
« on: March 07, 2018, 04:18:34 PM »
I got all my cuttings (except mulberry) from CRFG Annual scion exchange, and some of the ppl there mentioned that you can do the root cutting for lot of them (i thought those are for grafting only) and so picked some to try. And seems working for most of them.

I even put them directly in the potting soil for almost a month without any root hormone, and when i bought the rooting hormone, just applied again to all of them (none were rooted or showed sign of roots by that time). And now seems they all showing the growth. It could be the cold weather that caused them to not grow.

I have tried couple of pakistan mulberry cuttings and they seems to be sprouting. Not sure if the roots are formed or not as i can't see it from outside. But want to check, should i keep them outside now, given weather is warming up and to full sun or in shade? Any thoughts on it, i am Zone 9b (San Jose, CA) and day time weather is in 60s to 70s and night time is in 40s - 50s.

I have tried couple of root cuttings few months back and now they are showing new growth. I kept some of them (Pakistani Mulberry) with heat mat and others (Grape, Fig, Pomegranate, Persimmon) in pot without any heat mat in garage. Now as the weather is warming up, wondering if i can keep them outside and also in direct sunlight / shade area. Any thoughts or suggestion for that?

Can add Epsom salt. What's the reason for putting it in fabric pot and not providing more sun? Does plastic pot and more not good for blueberry?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Why my guava leaves are brown?
« on: February 26, 2018, 01:18:09 PM »
My kesar mango (2'-3' tall) in pot also took the cold very well, with no or very little protection. Kept it against fence and made sure it gets lots of sunshine throughout the day. Bring it inside only few days when the temp went close to 30F, but kept once outside in frost and it survived.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Why my guava leaves are brown?
« on: February 25, 2018, 01:10:14 AM »
It's Hawaiian white guava and in ground from 2 years. It's leaves at the upper part is brown and few leaves at the bottom are green. Last year it tried to fruit 1 guava but it didn't stay long. Is the brown leaves due to lack of nutrition or due to cold weather? I am in zone 9b. Haven't put any protection in winter and it's doing fine.
