What’s all the hype about Bergamont?
« on: September 10, 2020, 10:05:42 PM »
There’s been a lot of talk about this guy for whatever reason. Just wondering why? I ordered one just based on curiously, but I would like to know what other people use it for and why it’s so highly sought after?

I have one that’s potted, planted this spring, growing well. About three feet tall, hasn’t bloomed yet. I like to make orange marmalade and have read recipes for bergamot marmalade, and plan to make it and try it one day. I don’t plan to make perfume out of it though.

Beaumont Sour Orange is not much for eating out of hand, as the pulp is very sour.  What it is famous for, is the oil in the fruits peel.  The peel's oil is what gives the flavor to Earl Gray tea, and as Citradia wrote the peel oils are also used in perfume manufacturing.   I also once had a Bergamont tree, and can attest that it is a very overgenerous  grower.

So it seems there’s not much of a purpose for a hobbiest grower?

Probably not, unless you intend to use the oil.  I grow Buddhas Hand citron because it’s neat.  If scents are your thing then Bergamot might be worthwhile.

Very true! I’m a fanatic like that I suppose. I’m sure I’ll find some use out of it, perhaps make the room smell a little more appealing to my wife.. lol
