Title: Citrus in bloom
Post by: AndrewAZ on April 17, 2018, 09:22:53 PM
Very excited,  as I have some citrus in bloom this year, that have not fruited in the past.  One is an improved variety of tarrocco blood orange.  Another is kishu mandarin.  The one I am most surprised over, though is changsha mandarin.  I have only had tree 3 years, one in ground, and it is probably no more than 4-5 years old on it's roots.  I wasn't sure how this mandarin would do in AZ, since it is a cold hardy variety and not sold out here.  But, it has been an exceptionally strong grower for me.  I really feel like changsha would be a sought after variety if it wasn't so seedy.

Citrus looks a little stretchy, but healthy and congrats on the blooms.  Let us know how the fruit tastes in 8 months.

All of my kumquats are blooming now.  Next year should be a nice crop.

AndrewAZ, I have a tree from UGA, that is an improved version of changsha. It is supposed to have better flavor and less seeds. It is very small now. I put it in the ground a few months ago. It is on Flying Dragon rootstock, and growing well.

Yes, I have heard of it. I had a changsha in VA that q
Had better flavor than most from Gaylord in VA beach.  The flavor was outstanding but seedy.  I am hoping mine might be similar.  I have also heard that our high temps in Scottsdale help to sweeten citrus.  So I hope so.  Especially since I cannot import anything out here.
Lucky for me m, seeds do not horribly bother me.

I personally know Gaylord, what a nice guy..  He has been very silent lately, I have not seen him around any of the citrus forms.

Super great guy.  I used to love visiting his place to buy stuff.  He had a perfect microclimate of a pond, close to the ocean.  Unfortunately,  after I left VA in 2012, i know they had some really bad cold snaps and he lost a lot of trees.  Would love to know what he still has growing.

This summer I saw a kumquat with buds on it.  The plant was in a garden shop attached to a hardware store.  It had no name but the tree looked healthy and the price was good.  So I bought it.  It is now blooming, more than when I bought.  And fruit are very small but growing.
The finger lime I bought last year is finally blooming.  30 blooms yesterday.  More today.  Anyone have some Ponciris pollen?  Probably not.  Next year maybe I'll make the cross.
