White sapote thinning ?
« on: March 27, 2019, 10:54:42 PM »
To thin or not to thin, My Supersweet white sapote is loaded with fruit for the first time.
It had 3 last year and dropped them early.
I notice a few have dropped off but there are some clusters with up to 10 fruit.
The tree is around 5 years old and 8 feet tall and 8' feet wide probably 70+
fruit on it. Do they thin themselves like an orange tree or should I pull some?

Wow great job Mike! At that size I would let her hold on to the fruit she has and hope for the best!

White sapote trees can hold to maturity ridiculous crops of fruits, so I wouldn't bother with thinning.

Too much WS fruit will break branches on my tree. I thin most the fruit from the top of the tree that I cannot reach and falls when rotten. Lower branches, I do thin smaller fruits, hoping to redirect the trees energy and nutrients to the remaining fruits. Plus when I've been lazy and let all the fruit stay, it blooms less the next year.

Good luck!
