Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Inducing off season fruiting in mangoes
« on: October 30, 2023, 09:21:42 PM »
Jabo, I have a bit of a temp gradient, by the North window goes down to 45f at night and cloudy December days, the rest stays above 65. Right now I’m focused on disease free mango trees, no pests or fungus and healthy growth. Once I have that totally figure out I may try to get them in sync.
I think we could conclude that the temps are not low enough. But don't stress it, it's always a learning game, and it took me a few years to get everything figured out mango wise.
It's ok to go towards 45 in the greenhouse. Less heating bill and the cold helps the plants flower also.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: White Sapote or June Plum?

Not June Plum.
It's white sapote.
June Plum leaves are way different than the white sapote leaves.

He is in CA?
I got some cool ksu stuff from him.

Jabos fruit really quickly in pots if you get the right kinds.
There are scarlet cuttings fruiting in a quart pot ;D
I've done basically everything at one point in the house, and anything will be ok.
Low humidity can wreck some plants, but nothing should die.

Such a shame that there is confusion on the scientific name...it is now a. parvus when researchers in Indonesia named it last year.

I think it dropped to 46f before I brought them in. My rambutan lost all its leaves but it didn’t die so I don’t think it went any lower than that. My Pickerings failed to set fruit with the flowers but my 2 orange serbet are now in the early and mid stages.

How low does your average gh temps go in the winter?
Try to let it go to around 40-45. Then your plants should resync to the regular schedule hopefully. I would pinch off all those blooms and lower the temps. Then when it warms up they should flower again.

With my plant arrangement in my gh the mangos are too warm to flower in the winter. Most of my mangos flower in the fall after I put them outside in the summer. Is there anyway to create a cooling tent for a 48hr period of chill? I assume the humidity would be the biggest barrier to cooling the air as when the water condenses it releases a ton of energy.
How cold are you getting?
Mangos, citrus, and many other tropical plants can take temperatures into the 40s.
That will induce flowering right around March when it starts to warm up.

Last night was the first night the greenhouse heater turned on so far this fall (highlighted pink), and yet the exhaust fan also turned on today (blue)!

I really like how you have data for your greenhouse.
Do you care to share your setup on how it's done?
Really intruiged.

I brought back a fruit from PR, and yeah, it went straight to the trash.
Wikipedia calls it a famine food LOL

336
Wow you already have snow?
It’s about to get in the 30s now so I have to finish bringing everyone into the greenhouse.
Setup looks great!

are these still available?
will you be doing scions again in the future?
what is the difficulty level of rooting these?

thank you
I have biqi and rose red available.
Rooting cuttings of these are doable, but it's not the easiest as in stick it in a pot with soil and wait.

I'm in the same zone as you. Do you think it can handle short dips to 10F or otherwise thrive in 7b?
Yes, I had mine take 9f as tiny trees.
I have no idea if it will mess with flowering and fruiting cycles like loquat.
Growers in zone 7 should be able to make it happen with a bit of protection and luck.

Hey, how is everyon'e yangmei doing?

I planted out my last ruansi and pennyslvanica. I am content now. I really don't need every variety either, I will be happy with what I have.

After growing many many yangmeis, I have learned two things.
1. These are extremely easy to grow.
2. They are hardy to around 15f or lower.
If you can grow loquats, citrus, and olives, then you can grow this.
I expect to hear fruiting reports in the next year or so given how quickly they grow.

Much respect to the people on the grind like Simon and Kevin.
Hats off to them. 8)

I believe the best area to grow yangmei in the eastern US would be south GA and north FL. Some start up a yangmei farm there. I'm sure you could turn up a decent profit if you know what you're doing.

Did these come from the group order? Amazing to see it happening!

yup- literally had to check our messages for the order haha
That's awesome!

343
I was packing the plants up tonight and couldn't help noticing how girthy those scarlets were. Oh me oh my...
I will have more plants for sale in the future. Just currently can't do large numbers due to school and work.
Thanks so much for the support, it means a lot.
Everything but the rose red has been sold out.
If you want the rose red, the price is significantly reduced as overseas trees got those weird things on em.
I am never going to mess with yangmei again. EVER

Thanks everyone. I have found one.

I would love to get this plant.
I can trade my rose red yangmei (probably has RKN though) for one or two nice sized Araza.
Best,
Ryan

What I'm really looking for is psidium pulcherrimum. Really regretting not buying it when I had the option to import some seeds.
The fine and small leaf psidiums and eguenias are on another level in terms of ornamentals.

348
I have variegated coronata also.

349
How long till fruit? Looks amazing.

Thanks everyone for the support. Currently not accepting new orders.
