Fertilize your Sumo more and the fruit will develop the neck.  The neck on  sumo comes with larger fruit.

Vnomonee, UCR's 488 page Citrus Production Manual no where mentions citrumelo as a viable rootstock. Personally, I have never used citrumelo.  There must be a reason why UCR does not even list it as a usable rootstock.

I don't know about a interstock influence.  However, I have many trees grafted on Flying Dragon.  One tree now 20 years old shows a large over growth of the root stock, but has shown no scion problems at all.

Thanks Gaylord.  Your video is the first one I have see of the fruit.  I have a tree that bloomed last year but did not set fruit.    Perhaps this year.

Yes, trifoliata will root but it more difficult than many other citrus types. The failure rate is much higher.

Scale in easily killed with a horticultural oil spray. Horticultural oils can be found at most all nurseries.   Even several spray applications with a soapy water spray go a long way to kill scale.  May take several sprays if you use the soap spray procedure.

Venomonee, you will not over water your tree if it is planted in a 5-1-1.  Over watering a 5-1-1 tree would be almost imposable.   I often soak my 5-1-1 in a bucket for an half hour or so. and it is completely fine.  In fact it loves bath time..

roots Don't need that much air UNDER the roots.  Further, doing so DOES raise the perched water table even higher into the rest of the root system.

I have eaten the Australia Sunrise fruit.  It is terrible.

Gravel in the bottom of a container to improve drainage has LONG AGO  been disproved.  Doing so just raises the perched water table higher into the container.

The only citrus that I know that the rind is sweet and and the fruit can be eaten like an apple is Turunji.

I agree with SC400 concerning the taste of a Ponkan.   I think Ponkan is a better tasting fruit  then SUMO.  Its only problem for some people is the amount of seeds it contains (4 - 6 seeds per fruit.) Ponkan is a very rich tasting fruit

Most citrus organizations say  Volkameriana as a rootstock is just fair.  Does best when growing on sandy soils.  Scions grafted upon Volk generally produce fruit with 2% less sugar content.

Under your once a year fertilizer program, I would certainly use Osmocote Plus rather than plain Osmocote.   The Osmocote Plus gives some of the trace elements. Actually I don't believe the Osmocote last for a year.

Both Foliage Pro and Jacks 25-5-15 are good fertilizers.  You would not go wrong with either.  Foliage Pro is quite a bit more expensive in the long run.   I use only Jacks 25-5-15.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Flying dragon seedlings with pepper plant

Flaying Dragon as a cultivar ALWAYS has zigzag stems and AND strongly curved thorns, it is an easy way of selecting predominantly true clonal Flying Dragon seedlings, while discarding those which are obviously and definitely genetically different.  The straight stem and straight thorn seedlings are not Flying Dragon  cultivar.  Only about 50 60 percent of the seedlings planted produce the true Flying Dragon cultivar.
