I used Haydite when growing bonsai.  Most people think bonsai are grown in a medium such that they grow slowly.  Actually we try to grow them in perfect conditions to better shape them and get some thickness to the trunk.  Depending on the species, they need constant trimming.

Haydite does not store nutrients therefor it is best for hydro-culture. Broken Haydite might be better. I prefer natural volcano-stuff. It contains several minerals and sulfur.

Is this the same as 'hydroton' ?

I recall Millet had tried growing container citrus in lava rock years ago and had severe nutrient deficiency issues.
