If the stone is porous / cracked, the roots will find the way and you should have no problem with VP.
If it really is solid, your going to have problem with drainage either way. and a major concern will be with root rot unless you use a tree that likes wet feet.
what I am trying to say that if the stone is solid and you just make a hole in it, your in essence making a big underground container with poor drainage, when it rains, that "container" will just turn to wet sludge.
Some parts around here in the DR are like that. in some areas at construction sites i have seen that the is limestone is solid, at others its broken up and has lots of holes /cracks.
