Lychee Update......3/10/2011
« on: March 10, 2012, 08:58:00 PM »
Got a chance to take a few shots of the yard today. Unfortunately, about half were taken with the wrong camera setting, so I'll have to re-take those tomorrow. First, the lychee update:

Almost all of my trees have now flushed out new vegetative growth.  Pictured here is Early Large Red, Mauritius and Bengal.

There is bloom only on three trees, so far.  They are Brewster:

And both of my Hak Ip trees.

Only Peerless, which has remained dormant, seems to still have any possibility of a significant bloom this season.

Beautiful trees!!

Why can' t they all be covered in red fruits every year!!  I guess that's why some years, some growers kill it with lychee! make lots of $$$

I heard from a grower in Florida, you should not water the Lychee from November to March to ensure Lychee production.  This stresses the trees to entice them to produce fruit.  I haven't tried this yet because I just got a Lychee tree.

Might be good advice, but what do you about rains and high water table.  I think with lychees it can be about cold temps without regard for the hydration of the trees.  Of course, with insufficient cold, holding back hydration may make the plant stressed enough to bloom.  This is all academic once your trees get some size.  Eventually, you are at the mercy of Mother Nature.

Not necessarily so that we are always at mercy of mother nature. A system could be set up, similar to netting systems in Australia over orchards that keep the bats out. Only in the case of lychee it would be UV resistant clear plastic to keep rains out. I've thought of doing this for lychee and mango here. Plastic could be rolled up during non flowering times. Ofcourse this would be very expensive to set up, but if done right could yield enough extra fruits to more than pay for itself in very rainy places. And same structure could be used to install netting during fruiting to keep fruit flies out. But you have to have a very large orchard planting to make this feasible and worthwhile.

My answer is that there is NO high water table here. I was talking about doing it here.  ::)
