Marin,

I use whatever the place on Colonial Rd. in Central FL sells!

Seems to have pinebark, peat, sand, and maybe some other stuff, but I think thats about it.

As long as it drains well, and holds moisture...I think mango will be fine!  Soggy soils seem to mess them up!  I almost think alkaline is good for them, but I try to run them acidic or neutral...and they do great for me!

Very healthy trees!  I too am container growing in N Florida, was also curious as to your potting medium.  I am using Fafard 3L currently, but getting hard to find.

Okay Adam, Fess up (please)...where are you getting your Pickering(s). I just want one but the east coast and SF is just too far of a drive. Don't worry, I'm not going to ask you to sell one to me even though I want to  ;D (sounds like I won't be able to afford it anyways, lol)

Also, do you bare root your trees before repotting or are you keeping the root ball intact and  just adding soil around the sides and bottom when you go to a larger pot?

Thanks,
Nancy

All my mango trees come from the same place, Zill.

They seem to have a monopoly on production, and no one can keep up with them, or compete (at least that's how I see it).

As for repotting trees, I simply take them out of the small pot they came it, and stuff them in a larger pot with soil.  I don't usually fuss with the roots, unless they are very bound up.

I have a habit of stuffing the soil into the pot down with my fingers (or shovel handle), all the way around the pot (right near the edge of container).   This packs in the soil, and allows for more medium to be held in the pot.  If you don't stuff the containers, and pack them tightly with soil, they can hold up to 15% or so, less soil.  I'm always careful not to disturb the preexisting root mass, and make sure that soil is evenly packed in pot around the outermost ring of soil area.
