I'm not understanding why you would want them near a heat source ?you need to check how many chill hours are required by each variety. blueberries can tolerate plenty of cold anywhere between -10 to -30°F depending upon the variety.yeah I know they tolerate cold, but I was afraid they,d wake up of dormancy if the greenhouse warms them up ,since it will be heated, and they would be planted right next to it....
I've bought sumo from the store a few times and they weren't good at all. Also picked up Shasta gold a d a few other citrus. None of them were good, all went in the compost bucket. I assume its just because we are used to home grown.It must be as my Sumo and Shasta produced fruit for the first time this year and they were outstanding. I can't wait until the trees mature several years and the flavor gets better.
So sad CCPP doesnt have Shiikuwasha. Its one of my favorite citrus and i look everywhere for it whenever I'm in Japan.I grew up in Hayward and went to mt eden and chabot college. Its a better area than modesto for citrus and avocado trees.

I can't speak on the soybean oil vs hort oil subject, but I can say if you use pure oil or otherwise high concentrate oil it could kill your tree. I accidentally did this when I was messing with a hose-end sprayer and let the mix get too strong. I had a nice healthy guava tree that turned black and completely defoliated within a couple days of spraying it, and died shortly after.Agreed
For soap you can use Dr Bronners "pure castille soap". I think it is cheaper than soap marketed as insecticidal. You just want detergent-free soap, which is uncommon in grocery stores.
I would like to correct that I have a Bearss tree in pot for years.here is a video
Kaffir is only a branch on the Bearss.
I use Bearss leaves so tree only hold a dozen fruits each year.

So at Thanksgiving we did a taste testing with 4 varieties and the hands down winner was the Okitsu followed by the Owari then kishu and last was the miyagawa. This was the first season for both the okitsu and miyagawa fruiting. So thats a great sign for the Okitsu as it was the clear winner for everyone who tried it which was 12 people.
New Years I will be tasting an early picked Dekopon, Early picked Tango, Tahoe Gold, Cara Cara and Honey,
Then in Spring it will be all the golds- tahoe, shasta and nugget (no fruit this year on yosemite - will fruit this spring) and tango.
Next season I will be adding to the taste testing Yosemite, Moro, Xie Shan, Lee x Nova,

bringing fruit isnt a requirement, it would just help because I have plenty of hass fruits but not a ton of the other varieties. my sir prize is pretty loaded up and I have a few jan boyce, sharwil, green gold, hellen, pinkertons, gwen, fuerte we can sample too. if the group is smaller there should be more than enough. Around 30 people or less would be good.I'm on that FB group as well. If I didn't just start a new job I would be down for that but maybe next season when I will have some avocado's to contribute.

Yes, I read that from your reviews. What was the other mandarin varieties that you tasted?My okitsu's taste great at Thanksgiving and never last much past that time but I'm sure they would taste even better in December. I usually eat my Owari's around Christmas time. And yes they do get better over time as true with most mandarins.
Your environment may be better than mine for the Okitsu. Next time I order more scions, I will need to try the Okitsu again.
I do notice that the taste of some satsumas get much better (sweeter) when you leave the fruit ripe on the tree longer, I may have been tasting mine to soon. My brother has many satsumas trees as well and he just leaves his fruit ripe on the tree. It stays ripe for a few months and gets sweeter than mine. I don't care for the fruit when the flesh gets to soft even though it is sweeter.
I hear/read a few different reviews, some people say it tastes good, others say its average.
I'm pretty sure I grafted/fruited both the Okitsu wase(389) and Miyagawa(612) but it was a while ago and if I liked the taste it would still be on my trees. I didn't find any of my old grafts of either so if I remember correctly, the fruits looked like the photos in citrus variety collection and it was bland, not much sweetness, similar to all those China Satsuma on their list so I got rid of the branches.
If the gage of which citrus taste the best, is determined by total wins in citrus taste contests, then it would be Xie Shan.I have also read that Okitsu has been a winner in the recent past have you read that too ?

So guess Sumo will be 1+, and Ponkan will be 1-? Satsuma will be 3+?
