Citrus General Discussion / CCPP order on C-35 rootstock?
« on: May 24, 2020, 04:34:37 PM »
Hi Guys,
I'm new to grafting.  Just wondering about compatibility of C-35 and my CCPP order:

-Giant Key Lime
-Miyagawa Satsuma
-Red Australian Finger Lime
-Bouquetier de Nice Double Sour Orange

Also, any other feedback about these varieties would be appreciated.

Citrus General Discussion / Large trifolate orange trees
« on: May 03, 2020, 09:51:36 PM »
My dad has about 10 fairly large trifolate orange trees at his farm in South Carolina.  They're about 8'-10' tall and their trunks are about 3-4" thick.  What's the best way to graft a different variety to them and when should I do it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Shipping plants to Puerto Rico?
« on: December 22, 2019, 12:15:04 PM »
I am moving to Puerto Rico in a couple weeks.  Can I ship plants without soil to Puerto Rico?

I have a few small Mexican Mangosteens, Soursop, and Rollinias, a 3-4 ft Dream tree, and a few other things I would like to take to Puerto Rico with me, but I'm not sure the best way to take them.  Maybe ship in a box with the roots bagged in moist sphagnum moss?  Not sure if it's allowed or not.  The only thing I saw was no plants with soil.

Any suggestions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passion fruit buds dropping off
« on: October 04, 2019, 01:03:37 PM »
I have a couple of passion fruit vines growing like crazy on a trellis (and all over the fence, nearby trees, ground, etc).  One is Frederick and the other is Possum Purple.  They have both been in the ground about a year and a half.  They were in big pots for a year or so before that.  They have beautiful gloss green leaves and grow like mad.  As buds start forming all over the vines, they start out green, but then turn yellow and drop (see pictures).  I dont fertilize them, trim them or water them.  They get sun about 8 hrs.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pineapple identification help
« on: March 25, 2019, 06:43:42 PM »
My son pulled all the tags off my pineapple plants.  Now I don't know what's what.

I originally ordered several Elite Gold, Smooth Cayenne, White Jade, Sugarloaf and Florida Special.  I also picked up a Red Spanish on ebay.  I lost quite a few when they were small TC starts, maybe all of the elite gold.  I'm not sure now.

I have two like this.  Light green with red streaks.  No spines.

I think this was either Smooth Cayenne or Florida Special.  Medium spines on leaves, medium green, whitish flowers, lots of offsets.  I have four like this all fruiting now.

I have two like this.  Smaller plants with smooth solid green leaves.  Maybe Sugarloaf or White Jade?

Larger plant, smooth deep green leaves.  Sugarloaf or White Jade?  It seems like the Sugarloafs grew faster than the White Jades, so maybe this one is Sugarloaf and the two small ones are WJ?

Supposedly Red Spanish getting ready to flower.  Lots of red, very spiny.

Any help is appreciated.

Citrus General Discussion / Are my roots dead?
« on: February 26, 2019, 09:30:18 AM »
I was planting out a few potted citrus trees are notice one had dry looking roots.  They weren't crumbling away, but not bright white on the tips.  Does this mean my rootstock died?  The plant is about 2 feet high and doesn't look great, but is trying to push new growth.  I'm wondering if the roots are dormant or if they are dead and the top of the tree is still running off stored nutrients.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Coconut palms in Sarasota, FL
« on: July 09, 2018, 08:19:48 AM »
I'm not sure of the types, so let me know if you recognize them.
I was just surprised to see so many coconuts in Sarasota.  A few even had fruit on them.  These were all on Siesta Key, but I've seen quite a few around town close to the water.

This one had an orange trunk that looked different than the others.  The coloring didn't show up very well in this picture.  Any idea what variety?

These two looked like they had something wrong with them.

Fiji dwarf?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya vs Mountain Soursop as Rootstock
« on: February 22, 2018, 08:47:20 PM »
Are there any advantages to using Mountain Soursop as a rootstock versus Cherimoya?

Vigor?  Cold Hardiness?  Production?

I have a couple dozen Cherimoya seedlings that I started last Summer, but I recently picked up some Mountain Soursop seeds.  Is it worth planting them for any reason?

Thanks,
Sonny

Citrus General Discussion / Found a grapefruit tree
« on: December 03, 2017, 07:59:50 PM »
My neighbor's big "ligustrums" have grapefruit!   :o. It's extremely rare to see anyone else around here with citrus trees planted outside, especially this size and unprotected in a zone 8a/b border area.  In fact, no one I know of has in-ground citrus around here.  The trees are pretty large with trunks probably 7" across.  I'm just amazed I've never noticed them before and that they survive unprotected.

Citrus General Discussion / Graft refusing to push
« on: November 28, 2017, 04:49:44 PM »
I did an inverted t-bud of Golden Nugget on 9-17-17.  It healed up well, so I broke the top of the tree over pretty quickly, but now it's just sitting there refusing to grow.  The rootstock has tried to send out some growth above and below the GN a couple of times, but I have broken them off before they could get going.

The tree was in a shady area while it initially recovered, but now it is in my winter grow room.  Temps staying between 70 and 90F.  Any suggestions guys?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rooting Garcinia cuttings
« on: November 07, 2017, 04:58:24 PM »
Has anybody had success rooting cuttings of Garcinias?

I have a bunch of cuttings of Luc's garcinia, but they are much bigger than my seedling rootstock.  How difficult are they to root?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tips for tissue culture plants
« on: October 25, 2017, 08:39:42 PM »
I'm getting tissue cultured plants sent to me soon.  Any tips for how to treat them?

Three small avocado trees near each other all have small pinholes in the bark and two of the three have white stuff around the hole.  Is it laurel wilt?  One of the trees looked bad - darkened trunk and branches with leaves drooping.  A couple of days later, all the leaves turned brown above the graft and most of the trunk is black.

Let me know what you think.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Any Rec's for Persimmons and PawPaws?
« on: October 13, 2017, 09:41:54 PM »
Just did a fruit tasting with my kid's and they liked Persimmons.  We tried Fuyu, but I read that astringent types can have a better taste.  Does anyone have a variety they recommend?

Also, looking for recommendations on Pawpaw varieties.  There are quite a few.

Does anyone know when and where to get pawpaw fruits?  I'd like to try some before I invest the time and space for a few trees.  I would like to find a place that has a few different named varieties if I can.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Yellow fleshed Rambutan?
« on: September 29, 2017, 08:47:47 PM »
What manner of dark magic is this?  I'm guessing Photoshop or a nice dose of Yellow#5 dye, but what do you think?

https://www.flickr.com/photos/chi_vu/2670327971/in/photostream

The guy claims "Wild rambutan bunch.  Picked from the forest of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park" and that they were sour.

I also saw a few images similar to this in some Vietnamese websites, but not much else.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Krasuey's Sapodilla
« on: September 14, 2017, 12:38:20 PM »
I've seen a few posts from Australia saying it is everbearing, sweet, and much better than Sao Manilla, etc.

Do you guys have any info on Krasuey's Sapodilla?  Anybody have it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What do Lychees hate?
« on: August 24, 2017, 08:54:16 PM »
Second time this has happened.  I've had another container lychee tree suddenly drop most of it's leaves.  What might it be?  It seemed happy before, but I went out of town and came back to find most of the leaves brown.  It rained quite a bit while we were gone and the tree had been in almost full sun, but so had another lychee that still looks great.  Pot was painted white.

I haven't fertilized them so it's not from over-fertilizing.  Too much water?  Too much sun?  What do Lychees hate?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can you Germinate old Passiflora seeds?
« on: August 17, 2017, 11:57:35 AM »
I've tried germinating Passiflora seeds from BuyRareSeeds.com, but never had any luck.  Other guys online have said the seeds are old and didn't look like they would germinate.

Any tips here?

So far, I've tried:
-Soak in orange juice
-Soak in water
-Soak in Hydrogen Peroxide
-Scarification
-Paper towel method
-Direct sowing

Is there a way to tell if they are still good?  What should I do here?

Thanks,
Sonny

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What kind of fruit is this?
« on: June 30, 2017, 03:04:09 PM »
Maybe this one is obvious to you guys.  This fruit is on a vine planted near a pool in the Keys.  Looks like a hybrid apple-plum-mango fruit on the outside.  And while that would be cool, obviously that's not what it is.  The vine looks grafted.  The fruit does not look edible.  When I cut one open, the inside was white and had the feel of a nerf foam ball.  Not sure if it was ripe or not.

So, what is it?

I'm considering a move to Siesta Key on the coast of Sarasota, Fl.  Is there anything that does particularly well or not well here?  I'd be about a mile from the ocean.  USDA map says it's 9b/10a.

The only person I know around there is Wayne Clifton.   He is in Bradenton, which is not very far from Siesta Key, but he's not right on the coast either.  He's got full-sized mango, sapodilla, Dream anonna, lychee, caramobola, star apple, and a bunch of other stuff in his yard.  But not sure how that area compares to Siesta Key.  I saw a few coconut palms on Siesta, but not many.

Anyone with experience around there?  Any suggestions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to prune Dream tree
« on: June 14, 2017, 05:46:12 PM »

I'm new at Annona growing (I know.  Please, don't ban me from the forums!  ;)).  How should I prune  my small Dream trees?

Is a single or multi-trunk tree best?  Looks like some say 1 trunk, others say 3 trunks, and some say 6 trunks.

I'm in zone 8b and was thinking a larger single trunk may be more cold tolerant.  Any thoughts?
