Preferred method to graft avocado.
« on: February 05, 2012, 11:29:48 PM »
I have a three foot avocado seedling which I grew from a store bought avocado almost a year ago and I was wondering if I was to graft this with a scion from a neighbors tree what would be the prefered method of grafting and also what time of year. If I recall I think I've heard during the winter is good for grafting avocado?

Thanks

Cleft is the preferred method but side-veneer works well too. Winter/spring is probably the best time for grafting avocados.

Dr. Campbell at Fairchild Gardens has some videos on veneer and cleft grafting and he says winter is the best time for avocado. Remember, that's winter in Miami.

I've done both side veneer and cleft.  Both have been successful.  I will say that I am not a very good cleft grafter.  Avocados have been one of my few success stories with cleft grafting.

Nice videos.  Thanks.  What would be a good type A avocado to graft onto a Brogdon...something that would take hardy pruning?  Thanks, J

I have a very good success rate with cleft grafting avocado, you will probably be sucessful if you use clean instruments and use parafilm to avoid scion dessication.  I allow mine partial shade, and they eventually grow through the parafilm and pop the grafting bands on their own.  Very low maintenance!
