Tropical Fruit Discussion / Variegated guava and fruit fly larva
« on: October 08, 2019, 11:27:44 AM »
I have heard that variegated guavas don't have fruit fly larvae problems. I have experienced this myself with my tree. I wonder if the striped pattern plays a role like in the zebra.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Weeping banana
« on: August 12, 2019, 04:26:22 PM »
I am in Safety Harbor FL. I have a Raja Puri banana that I purchased and planted about 1.5 years. It was stunted for a while but is now growing really well with the summer rains. The problem that I am having is that all the new leaves are so large and heavy that they are breaking in half. Is there something I can do to prevent this?

Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with Mysore banana
« on: August 05, 2017, 10:58:04 PM »
Need help figuring out what is wrong with my Mysore banana.  Purchased May 2016 at the Manatee Rare Fruit Council sale from going-bananas. Planted in the ground a few weeks later.  Fertilized monthly with fruitilizer purchased at the sale. Plant was growing great until December when it stopped growing. I understand banana plants, and a lot of plants for that matter, slow their growth or stop altogether during the winter time.  In march when all other plants started growing again this Mysore did not but then slowly it started pushing out abnormal looking leaves. The new leaves appear stunted.  Currently there is a new leaf coming out of one of the plants that appears brown and mushy as if it is rotting. The plants in the picture are two water suckers.  I chopped the mother plant down since it wasn't growing at all and let these two water suckers grow to see what they would do.  I have not sprayed with anything.  Any help would be much appreciated. There is an African rhino horn about 10 feet away planted at the same time that appears to be growing normally.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with ants at the base of my mango tree
« on: December 25, 2016, 11:09:26 PM »
Need advice on what to do about the trunk of this mango tree. This tree is planted in Safety Harbor which is middle of Pinellas county. This is a seedling that was in a 15 gallon pot for about 4-5 years until this past May when I planted it in the ground.  It has had two flushes and grown about 4ft since then.  I have grafted two other varieties to it over the last two years.  I recently noticed that the trunk at the bottom was cracking and when the soil at the base is disturbed I notice a lot of ants.  I may water this tree every couple of weeks with a hose. I have fertilized with furitilizer twice since I planted it in May.  The mulch in the picture is as of this past week.  Prior to the mulch there were weeds up to the trunk.  Are the ants the problem or are they a sign of an underlying issue with the tree? Any help is much appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nishikawa vs wurtz vs other
« on: July 05, 2016, 10:56:33 AM »
Hello everyone! Looking to add one avocado tree to my new yard this summer. Looking for a higher oil content avocado that will do well in pinellas county with a medium growth habit.  Used the forum search but still cannot decide. Also, please let me know if either if these two need a second tree for better pollination. Going down to the mango festival this weekend and looking to pick a tree up on the way.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Starting from scratch
« on: June 07, 2016, 11:24:47 AM »
Long time lurker here introducing myself. Finally getting around to posting. Thanks to all for all the great information posted here. I started growing tropical fruit trees in Sebring, FL while i was in high school in the late 90s and then on and off through college while visiting the parents. I wasted a bit of money during this period as half of the plants didn't make it through the winter cold snaps. What is still there from the original plantings are guavas, mango seedlings (none of the purchased grafted ones survived), peaches, a tamarind that has never produced, a bunch of pineapples, a few citrus trees that are struggling, starfruit, seedling avocados (grafted have not survived), and a bunch of bananas/plantains. All of these have survived without any care to them other than the lawn irrigation. Fast forward 17 yrs and my wife and I have just purchased our first home and will be planting the yard out with fruit trees. Knocked down 7 norfolk pine to make room but have two huge oaks on the lot that are staying and may compete for sunlight in the future. We are in Safety Harbor Fl which is on the central west coast. I've been growing some fruit trees in containers for the last 5 years while renting and am now ready to put them in the ground. We also went to the Manatee tropical fruit tree sale a few weeks ago and loaded up with more trees. I am just getting into grafting mangos and look forward to creating some frankentrees. Here is what we are currently going to be putting in the ground. Looking forward to learning a lot from this group.
